Alysson Mondragon Estel Herald Iphindra

Estel sits on the edge of a table in the Thunderfoot Inn, swinging her feet back and forth.

Alysson stares at her, eyes the table, then finds a different table and sits down on it. This is allowed now.

Estel grins at him. "Hey, Alysson."

Iphindra runs inside the inn, her hair undone. Regardless of her speed, she's trying to tie her braid again.

Estel grins at her too. "Hey, Iphindra! You need a sec'?"

"Ho there Estel, Iphindra!" Alysson grins at them both.

[Iphindra]: "Hi! It's okay, I- I can handle this," she beams. "How are you?" She looks around, and her face drops a little. "Shun and Gwen won't be with us today?"

Alysson blinks. "No supervision?"

Estel shakes her head, pouting a little. "Gwen's still resting, and Shun got called to Stromgarde for a mission."

Estel points at herself. "You don't think I count as supervision?" she asks, half-teasing.

Iphi relaxes when Estel mentions Shun didn't run away because of her and her snowball.

"Uh, well… you know, you're… the fun kind!" Alysson says.

Estel laughs and hops down from the table. "I'll take it." She tilts her head towards the door. "So I was thinking we ought to check up on that kid. Li Li. See if her uncle is back yet." She looks at Iphindra, waiting.

"Speakin' of no supervision," Alysson agrees with a smile.

Iphi is still working on her braid. "N- no, let's start right now, I can do my braid as we m- move! Making sure Li Li and her uncle are okay i- is more important!"

Estel gives Iphindra a thumbs-up. "Alright, let's get out there."

Estel considers Menace, who is eating. She shakes her head and just jogs towards the road.

Iphi runs but her work on her braid is going steady. Expert work, although it's badly done.

They head down the road to Mudmug's.

Li Li jumps to her feet as she sees the group approaching. "It’s you guys! Thank goodness. I can’t believe Uncle Chen left me here with the weird mud guy. I swear I have heard all of his stories like three million times now. Also he is not a good cook."

"I have snacks!" Alysson offers.

"Hey, Li Li." Estel grins. "You must be bored."

Iphi looks sad at that comment. That poor man made her food and she's saying it's bad. Rude.

Li Li looks hopefully at Alysson. "To share?"

"Why else?" Alysson starts rummaging in his bag.

Li Li pats herself down. "I'll return the favor when I can!" She is out of snacks.

"Y- you already gave us paint!" Iphi smiles. "W- We're returning the favor now."

Humming to himself, Alysson pulls out some dried peaches. "There, this'll do," he decides out loud, offering them to Li Li.

"That's true!" Li Li giggles. She takes a couple of dried peach slices and pops one in her mouth. "Thanks!"

"I wasn't sure if you'd still be here," Estel says. "I thought that maybe your uncle might've returned by now."

"Well, I'm here. But now that you’re here — " Li Li smiles. "All I wanted to do is explore Pandaria, but Uncle Chen wouldn’t get off his butt. And then he got off his butt without me and went off to explore on his own! He just told me not to get in any fights while he was gone, though. He didn’t say I couldn’t explore. And if I have you guys with me, I definitely won’t get in fights, because you can handle it. Right?"

Estel looks at Iphindra. She looks at Alysson. She clearly has the realization that today, SHE is the supervisor… and she is the fun one.

"Definitely," Estel says, grinning at her.

Alysson smacks his fist into his palm. "Right!"

"W- we must help!" Iphi beams at Estel.

Li Li beams. "Finally! A chance to look around without having to stop every forty-seven steps for another rest! I bet there’s all kinds of cool places we can visit."

Alysson tries to count to forty-seven on his fingers and stops at ten. "Infinity…" he whispers.

"Hey, y’all," calls Mudmug. "You takin’ the kid out for adventures, huh? Would you mind doin’ me a favor while you’re out?"

"O- of course! How can we help?" Iphi goes to him and tilts her head.

"Y’all know why they call me Mudmug, right?" Mudmug looks around. "Because I make my beer with the muddy water from the riverbanks to the south. Adds an extra somethin’ to the brew. I’d be obliged if you could collect some for me in this here flask." He offers Iphindra a battered metal canteen with a rusty cap.

Alysson nods. Muddy water. This is perfectly acceptable.

Iphi nods. Of course. That makes sense. She takes the canteen. Rust adds flavor as well, for sure.

"Okay!" says Li Li. "See you later, Mudmug. It's time for adventure!"

Estel waves lazily. "Later, later."

"So," Estel says, turning to Li Li. "Where do you wanna go?"

Li Li points immediately at a waterfall in the distance. "There!"

As they approach the river, Estel scatters a handful of spectral feathers under their feet, and they begin to float.

Iphi is surprised at first, but then beams at their levitation.

"Look at that waterfall! I wonder if there's a cave behind it." Li Li nods knowingly. "You should always check behind waterfalls for caves."

"Le- let's check!" Iphi says excitedly.

"Who's goin' in?" Alysson asks.

"I can do it!" Iphi nods, determined.

Estel puts a Shield of Light around Iphi. "Go for it!"

Li Li watches, wiggling in excitement.

Iphi is hit by the pressure of the waterfall for a second, breaking the shield almost instantly. The shield, however, helps her be propelled further down the river safely.

"See any caves?" Li Li asks.

"Oof," Estel mutters. "You good?"

[Iphindra]: "N- no cave!" She says, drenched in muddy water. Her braid is undone again, and she has to do it all from the beginning. "No cave, no!" She giggles. "I- it was fun!"

"Aw, maybe we'll find another," Alysson says.

"Well, at least you had fun checking!" Li Li doesn't seem all that disappointed. She is enjoying floating above the river.

"You wanna grab some water for Mudmug?" Estel nods to Iphindra.

"Oh, right!" Iphindra begins to run around the riverbend, picking up only the best muddy water. Plants help her keep the leaky recipient closed enough.

"I got it!" she beams.

Estel gives her a thumbs-up.

Alysson cheers her on.

They head to the silken fields, where Li Li is very excited to look around. "Check out all the cool silk! Do you think that they really get this stuff from the silkworms' rear ends?"

"Do they?" Alysson peers at a giant silkworm.

Iphi giggles.

"Uh, I think so?" Estel shrugs.

Outside one of the houses stands a stoop-shouldered elderly pandaren in an elegant robe of gold-embroidered red silk. "Visitors!" he greets them. "You are most welcome."

"I am Silkmaster Tsai. Welcome to the ancient Imperial Silk Farm, which dates back to the earliest dynasties of Pandaria. Would you like to learn how silk is made?" He beams.

Iphi invites Li Li to stand in front of them. "Sh- she does, yes!" Time for some education!

Alysson raises his hand. "Does it come out of a silkworm's rear?"

Nobody answers this question.

Li Li raises her hand. "I want to learn!"

Silkmaster Tsai nods. "The first thing you will need are fresh mulberry leaves. You can find them in our grove to the northwest. When you have collected a handful, bring them to a hungry silkworm in the feeding pit to our west. And then you may skip the wait for the next part, and go to our processing hut to collect some raw silk. Also in the west. Please stay on the western side of the farm."

Li Li nods. "This is kind of cool. A day in the life of a… a silk-getting guy."

"What are they called, anyway?" Li Li speculates. "Silkers? Silksters? Worm-butt squeezers? I think I'll just stick with silk-getting guy."

Iphi giggles. "Silk-getting guy is good!"

"Silkers is like milkers for cows," Alysson says.

"I hope you will enjoy your tour of Pandaria’s most ancient and respected silk farm!" Silkmaster Tsai bows to them. He manages not to laugh at Li Li.

"Thanks!" Estel waves. "Let's find some leaves."

There are some mulberry trees and bushes, and the silk farmers are carefully picking leaves and putting them in baskets.

Iphi helps foster the growth of new leaves on the trees and bushes. She smiles at the workers she just gave more work to. Look! So you don't run out!

Estel grabs an empty basket and starts filling it. Li Li puts some leaves in Estel's basket.

There are silkworms all over the place. They can have some leaves, as a treat.

Iphi gleefully feeds the silkworm. She pets them as they feed, and speaks to them. They don't seem to care. They want to eat, eat, eat, eat, eat.

Alysson tries to offer a silkworm a banana. It gets ignored. Apparently silkworms are not as excited by bananas as he is.

Li Li tries to share a dried peach slice. The silkworms are picky eaters. All they want is leaves. Li Li eats the peach slice herself.

"Okay, silk-getting guys," Estel says. "Let's find the processing hut?"

They do.

Silk is being processed in the silk processing hut. Loommaster Jeng looks curiously at them. "Are you taking the tour?"

"Yes!" says Li Li, holding her arms out. "We're here for some raw silk, please."

"Yeah!" Alysson says, just as eagerly as Li Li.

Loommaster Jeng fetches a basket that is a little too big for Li Li to comfortably carry. He gives it to Alysson instead.

Alysson bends down to show Li Li its contents.

Iphi's ears droop. She was hoping to see a demonstration of how it was made. Oh well.

It looks like their tour has indeed skipped a portion of the process.

Li Li touches the raw silk in the basket. "Oh, it's not soft yet…"

"It's raw!" Alysson says. "Does that mean we can eat it?"

"No," Estel says immediately. "It's not good to eat and it'll taste bad."

"Would you eat a shirt?" Li Li asks Alysson.

"If I was hungry," Alysson says.

Iphindra awaits the answer a little worriedly. Once she hears it, though, she relaxes. That's reasonable.

"Ewww!" Li Li makes a face. "Well, we'll keep you well-fed so you don't have to." She offers Alysson one of the peach slices he gave her originally.

Alysson smiles at her. "That's why I carry snacks," he says, but he does accept the peach slice and pops it into his mouth.

There is at least a portion of the silkmaking process to watch - silk being spun into thread.

Iphi observes with her eyes. They are open, and observing the silkmaking.

"Y'know, I bet Cress'd be interested in all this," Alysson says.

"Sh- she does love making clothes!" Iphi nods.

"Yeah, probably," Estel says.

"Your friend?" asks Li Li. "You should tell her. This place is pretty cool."

"Were we supposed to bring this back to the guy?" Estel gestures to Alysson's basket. "Uh, the… silkmaster."

"Silkmaster Tsai!" Li Li apparently remembers the guy's name.

"The silker master," Alysson nods.

Iphi nods. "The silk-getting guy!"

Silkmaster Tsai is gazing unhappily toward the east, wringing his paws, but he turns with a convincing smile at the ready. "Ah! Did you find all of the items? Did you pay close attention to our process?"

Li Li points at Alysson's basket and nods. "We did!"

Alysson suddenly looks nervous. "There's not a test, is there?"

"G- get the leaves to feed the worms, take their cocoons, spin the silk," Iphi summarizes excitedly.

"Superb!" the Silkmaster says. "Please, you may keep the silk you collected. A free sample for our foreign visitors!" His smile starts to seem a little strained. "Thank you for visiting us! Safe travels home!" He glances over his shoulder to the east.

Alysson also glances over his shoulder to the east. "What's over there?"

Li Li takes her free sample from the basket. "I'll have to show Uncle Chen… when he gets back."

"Oh, nothing!" Silkmaster Tsai laughs nervously. "Everything is under control, the western part of the farm is for visitors…"

"Sure," Estel says. "Thanks for letting us visit!"

Li Li starts to creep off towards the eastern part of the farm.

Alysson excitedly follows.

Estel pulls a veil of Shadow around herself and Fades. Don't pay any mind to the people going to the place they're not supposed to go…

A young pandaren man in embroidered turquoise silk is sitting slumped on his knees in the dust, gazing eastward. He drags a despairing paw down his face.

"Hey," says Estel. "You good?"

White Squad’s arrival startles him. "Ah! Oh. Oh! The foreigners." He climbs to his feet, casting a nervous glance to the east. "You… help with things, yes?"

"W- we try! And do, most of the time," Iphi says, reassuringly.

"That's us! Heroes," Alysson says.

"Yup. I'm Estel, and this is Alysson, Iphindra, and Li Li." Estel gestures.

He nods with relief. "I am Chu. I was conducting an experiment to improve silk output and I… instead I seem to have created a race of bloodthirsty, aggressive super-moths! Could you, uh. Help?"

"Did he say 'bloodthirsty super-moth'? See… THIS is the type of adventure I can get behind." Li Li grins. "Come on, let's go kill some of those little guys first."

"Sure," Estel says, giving Chu a thumbs-up.

Iphi tilts her head. "M- most moths don't even have a mouth… H- how can they be bloodthirsty?.." She eyes Journeyman Chu. "What did he d-do to the moths…" she whispers.

Journeyman Chu seems deeply upset about what he did to the moths. This was clearly not his end goal.

Li Li does not actually fight, but she cheers the others on.

"Hey!" Alysson exclaims as a moth tries to wrap him in a cocoon.

Estel says, "Watch it, buddy," to the moth, and hits it with a blast of Shadow.

They circle around back to Chu.

Chu gazes uneasily past them. "Oh… good, yes. Yes. It seems like there aren’t quite as many now. Hopefully you’ve bought me some time before I am in big, BIG trouble."

An older pandaren who has come to stand beside Chu snorts. "Yes, I am sure no one has noticed swarms of biting moths at this end of the farm. But speaking of BIG trouble…"

Estel mutters, "I think the guy in charge definitely noticed."

The pandaren looks at White Squad. "I am Master Goh. The esteemed Journeyman Chu has not told you the worst of it. His experiments have created a monster. It is silken death with wings. We call it… Mothallus."

"Mothallus," Alysson whispers ominously.

Iphi blinks… "Silken Deathwing?" she repeats incorrectly.

"Mothallus," Li Li says as dramatically as she can.

"Deathweng," Alysson automatically corrects.

"So you want help with that, right?" Estel checks.

"If you would go into the feeding pit there and stir the bait around, you may draw the beast to you. Our mothfighters will assist you if they can." Master Goh looks tired.

"Mothfighters…" Li Li whispers.

"Elite fighters in the moth war," Alysson says, nodding.

"What's the bait?" Estel glances at the nearby pit. "Just those leaves?"

"Obviously," Li Li says. "That's what they eat."

"If it doesn't work, I'll be bait!" Alysson says.

"Mothfighters…" Iphi tilts her head. How often do they have to fight mouthless, clawsless, soft and chubby insects?..

"Sure," Estel says, and Shields everybody just in case as they head down into the pit.

"Alysson, you wanna swish it around?" Estel nods to the leaf pile and stands back.

Alysson practically leaps for the rake. "Sure thing! Here I go!"

Mothallus descends from the sky. That is a BIG MOTH.

The massive wingspan of Mothalus is larger than the feeding pit itself. This moth cannot be measured in Cressidhas, because Cressidha is not present. It's bigger than the giant watermelon. It's bigger than the giant turnips.

Iphi stares in awe.

Alysson gapes at it. "How did they make this?"

Li Li ducks behind Estel. "Get it!"

As promised, pandaren mothfighters descend into the pit to help. Many of them get webbed.

Alysson helps clear the webbing, swsshing and whssshing all the way.

Estel focuses her magic on the moth, pressuring it with Shadow even when it flies up out of the reach of Alysson's swords.

Iphi fights with the power of the moon, and heals her friends hurt by the giant butterfly.

Eventually, Mothallus, Silken Deathweng, is defeated!

Master Goh looks pleased. He puts a paw on Chu’s shoulder. "We are pursuing perfection in our art and in ourselves. Along the way many mistakes will be made." He pats Chu consolingly.

To White Squad, Goh adds, "I’m sure by tomorrow this field will be swimming with more mistakes. Still, we thank you for your help. Feel free to stop by again!"

"THAT… WAS… AWESOME!" Li Li shouts.

Iphi giggles.

Chu looks incredibly relieved. He bows to the team.

Alysson grins. "We did some real heroics," he says.

"Okay," Estel says, glancing at Li Li. "Where do you wanna go next?"

Li Li looks around, then points to the north. "Mudmug mentioned a village called New Cifera. Want to go check it out?"

"Hey, it's your trip," Estel says, grinning. "Sure."

"What happened to Old Cifera?" Alysson asks.

They head north, passing a herd of goats.

"I don't know!" Li Li shrugs. "Maybe they'll tell us?"

They reach Old Cifera. It's a village at the foot of the winding path up a nearby hill. There is a fish statue in the center of the village. A pair of pandaren children zoom around the statue, playing tag.

"Look at this!" Li Li darts into the village. "There's a big fish statue. You think the jinyu built this place?"

Iphi approaches the statue. "Hmmm…"

Li Li rushes to the fish statue, where she finds a scroll on the other side.

Li Li unrolls the scroll and reads: "In the days before the Sundering, legend has it that all rivers flowed to Pandaria. Few were more aware of this than the clever jinyu. Over time the wisest of their people learned to commune with the waters of the river, and listen for the future and news it would bring. These elders were respected by most races and earned their title of 'Waterspeakers'."

"Shaman!" Iphi whispers.

Li Li rolls up the scroll respectfully and ties it back up with the red cord just the way it was.

Iphi smiles at her.

Alysson is focused on the pandaren cubs.

"Neat," Estel says. She glances over as she spots a jinyu she recognizes. "Oh! Ashyo, hey!"

The jinyu blinks bulbous eyes, gently startled. "Where have I seen you before?"

"Tian Monastery," Estel says patiently. "I'm Estel! These guys are new, though - this is Alysson, that's Iphindra, and that's Li Li."

"Ah, yes, of course." Clever Ashyo nods solemnly, then turns his attention back to the massive waterfall to the north. "Do you see that? It must be the water supply for the whole valley. Have you seen the vegetables here? The pandaren use this water to grow vegetables the size of a house! Where could it come from? What is so special about it? The elders among my people know a special technique for speaking with the water and divining the future. Perhaps this same technique can provide insight into the water’s source? It’s worth a try! Would you like to come and see?"

"Sure, okay," Estel says, shrugging. "Why not?"

Alysson follows the waterfall upwards. "Looks like it's that fellow's drool," he says.

Estel looks up at the waterfall in question. There is a carved stone face that the water pours out of.

"I- I'd love to help! Growing vegetables of that size would be of great help to a l- lot of people!" Iphi beams excitedly.

"I'm glad to see that there's still some jinyu left, after what happened in the Jade Forest," says Li Li. "Say, you think they're related to murlocs?"

Iphi pauses to think. Are they?

Alysson looks to Estel for the answer.

"I dunno," Estel says unhelpfully.

Ashyo heads up the road from the village and into the hills, to a marshy plateau of pools filled with blooming lotuses. He leads the way to one of the larger pools, close to the waterfall’s foot.

"This seems like a good spot to consult the water!" Clever Ashyo decides.

Iphi nods.

Ashyo wades into the pool’s edge. "I’ve only done this once before. I hope it works!" He raises his staff in a kind of salute to the waterfall, and then plants its end in the muddy bottom of the pool before him.

Alysson stares at the waterfall drool more, now with a better view.

Clever Ashyo closes his eyes to concentrate. He begins to sway gently with the rocking of the water’s surface in the breeze. After a moment he murmurs, "What… what is this place? It’s beautiful…."

Estel looks at him blankly. He's clearly seeing something she isn't. "Uh…."

Clever Ashyo’s expression tightens. "But something… no, something is not right!" He staggers abruptly and lets go of his staff to fall to one knee in the water, dazed.

"Hey, you alright?" Alysson asks, frowning.

"What's happening?" Li Li asks.

Iphi picks up the staff before it gets taken by the river's flow, then places a hand on Ashyo's shoulder. "A- are you hurt?"

Ashyo looks dazed. He collects his staff from Iphindra. "Not… injured, just…" He trails off vaguely.

One of the lotus-farmers behind the group has stopped her work to watch them. "Hey, travelers," she calls. "I know what your friend has seen. He will need to rest for now. Come and speak to me."

"Okay," Estel says. "You take it easy, Ashyo."

Ashyo sits down on the riverbank.

Plants from Iphi's hair wrap comfortingly around Ashyo. They have a soothing smell. She casts rejuvenation on him before joining the others.

The pandaren woman nods at the group. "Zhang Yue. Hello." She glances over at Clever Ashyo. "I’ve never seen anyone get a vision from these waters so easily. Then again, I’ve never seen anyone just stick a stick in it for a vision before, either. Maybe there’s more to those ‘crazy jinyu rituals’ than we thought." She shakes her head and looks back at the group.

"Your jinyu friend must have experienced what we call ‘the Golden Dream.’ Many of us working here have seen it too — often after a long day of toiling in the pools. It is said that the vision — and the feeling of elation it brings — is the mind’s reward for the work of the body. There is an easier way, though, if you haven’t got all day to spend working in the lotus pools. Or if you didn’t bring… a magic stick."

"Huh," Estel says.

Li Li looks curious. "What's that? I didn't bring a magic stick. This time."

"There is a tea that can be brewed from dreamleaf," Zhang Yue says. "You can collect it around the shrine on the upper tier. If you take it to Yan in the village, he can brew the tea for you."

She clears her throat. "Oh, and — watch out for the snapping turtles."

Iphi looks in the direction of the sun, burning brightly above the lotus fields. Is… the Golden Dream… Caused by a heatstroke?

Li Li mutters something sassy once they get out of earshot of Zhang Yue.

Iphi spots the tree. "Th- there! that must be it, I've never seen that plant before!"

Estel nods and goes to take a cutting.

They find Yan in the village. The pandaren cook looks up from his work. "Oh, hello! Haven’t seen you around before. Do you need something?"

"We're lookin' for a special tea," Alysson says.

"Hey," Estel says, and holds up her sprig of leaves.

"Ah, dreamleaf!" Yan smiles broadly. "So you want to see the Golden Dream, do you? Come to think of it, I haven’t seen the Dream in years — not since I was a cub spending long hours playing in the pools. Do you mind if I make enough tea for all of us?"

"Why would we mind?" Estel asks. "Go for it."

Alysson nods eagerly.

Yan strips the leaves from the stem and brews up a tea. He serves everyone a cup.

"I- I wonder if the Golden Dream has to do with the Emerald Dream…" Iphi wonders.

They drink their tea. There is no feeling of elation the way Zhang Yue described, only a vision that everyone experiences.

The vision begins with the musical sound of water — but when it shivers into focus in the mind’s eye, that water is a thin, shallow flow over muddy ground. It descends from a great height, plummeting down mountain cliffs and into a valley below.

Despite the vivid green landscape of the Pandaria they have seen thus far, this valley appears sunk in autumn darkness. The rolling fields of grass are sere and faded, and the graceful trees shed red or golden leaves.

The vision flows east, past an ornamental temple, to the far end of the valley where a massive, ancient palace or fortress stands. Braziers and torches burn along its terraced levels. Two mogu statues, as tall as the mountain peaks around them, stand silent guard over the valley, their colossal spears crossed in warning.

Yan blinks and shakes his head. "What? No. That’s not right." He peers into his teacup. "It should be beautiful. It should be pristine!" He looks up unhappily. "I must have brewed the tea wrong. I apologize."

Iphi seems to take that vision particularly badly. Why are the trees like that? Some leaves on her head fall to the ground, they are sere. "O- or something is happening…"

Estel rubs her forehead, setting the teacup down on Yan's table.

"Huh…" Even Li Li seems deep in thought.

"But the water's still makin' plants big," Alysson says, frowning in confusion.

"Yeah, I dunno," Estel says. She rubs her face. "That was disorienting."

Li Li shrugs it off quickly. "I've got a lot to write about in my journal…"

"You wanna head back?" Estel asks. "It's gettin' late."

"Y- yes you do…" Iphi says, as if she knew what Li Li wrote in her journal. "And we haven't e- even found your uncle yet.."

"Oh," Li Li says, looking up at the sky. "Yeah. We better hurry, actually."

"Thanks," Estel says to Yan, who is still looking upset. "Later, later!"

They return. Mudmug is sitting out in his yard, watching the road expectantly. He lifts a paw in greeting.

"That was great!" Li Li grins. "You guys should take me exploring again sometime. And it looks like we finished before Uncle Chen got back. Perfect!"

"You got my water?" Mudmug asks, rising to his feet.

Estel grins at Li Li. "Any time." She nods to Iphindra.

Iphi hands him the water. "Of course!" Plants are all around the recipient.

"Aw, thanks. I knowed you for friends as soon as I seen you. You done good." Mudmug smiles at them.

"We done good," Alysson agrees.

"We d- did! I hope they leave moths as they are, now, though…" Iphi says.

"Yeah," Estel says, nodding. "I think I'm gonna sit for a bit, yeah? That tea was… weird."

"Hey, uh… if you need anythin', I can get you stuff," Alysson offers.

"Me too…" Iphi shakes her head. "I will see you soon!"

"Sure," Estel says. "Maybe like a berry juice or a lemonade?"

Alysson nods and rushes off to find a drink.
