My dear old friend, your company
Inspired little envy then,
When borrowing you came to claim
My speculations and my pen,
When, stealing out into the snows
To walk the way from here to there,
You only in the midway hush
Would join to share the clearest air.
I have on some occasion found
The span of the accord we've kept
A reason for to turn and spy,
And glimpse your nature as you crept -
For you were not inclined to crow,
And needn't if it still's the sign
Of heavy deeds, when worth their weight,
To lift their voice advance of thine.
O, I had heard the whispers, friend,
And more, from those who'd held your hand,
Or bargained with fate's surety
Enough to tempt your reprimand.
I know some distance has been placed
Between us by a higher cause,
And that it has been lasting toil
To climb from emptied stupor's jaws,
And it has been some aching span
Since last you came to call on me.
Does it then pain you when they spurn
Your reticence and modesty?
Does it then give you cause to grieve,
And would you like a list'ning ear,
Or, captive to your habits, shall
You stay as silent as sincere?
I find that when you are forgot,
It only serves but to incite
The certain bent to swift attract
A restitution for the slight -
When you are not correctly known,
When you are treated with disdain,
One summons you with heedless acts,
Or trespasses on your domain.
If you could fit forgiveness find,
Remember, we have seen your face.
Recall the distant ways we've walked,
And that, by elevated grace,
The one sole purpose that I know,
The sure and manifestly won,
Is to persist in sounding thus
As your device: threnodion.

It wasn't entirely an even match. These Scarlets were hungrier, their gear in poor repair, their wanderings and their hostility guided by delusion and desperation. Still, there had been more of them. Confessor and defender had been forced to defend themselves in sincerity. Etone watched Vond closely when the blaze of streaming radiance subsided, leaving him with a slight shudder, and the predictable alarm at what had just transpired flooded back in its place.

The Scarlets had been jabbering an expected torrent of invective toward the undead. Toward them. The Scarlets had recognized the Inquisitor, and decided their lives were worth the attempt at eliminating him from the Scourge's forces.

"I remember him. From Hearthglen." Vond shivered slightly while standing over the man he had just slain.

"…So do I."

"From before. Did you hear what he was yelling? He knew me too."

"Don't pay it any mind. They were too far gone. It's the same old story. Come, let's report this. I'm sorry, Vond, I couldn't reach them while they—"
