- Extralegal Justice: An acolyte of the Night Warrior — the vengeful aspect of Elune — Vesyllah acts as something of a self-appointed judge, jury, and frequently executioner of the wicked. Those who seek justice within the scope of the law may find themselves at odds with Vesyllah and her methods.
- Hyjal Veteran…of sorts: Vesyllah was involved in a handful of skirmishes in the Third War, and answered the call when Mount Hyjal was attacked. She primarily acted as a medic, tending to the wounded, but had to fight when her patients' lives were threatened.
- Gets by With a Little Help From Her Friends: Vesyllah's work with herbalism and alchemy goes beyond picking flowers and brewing elixirs. She has long experimented with a variety of mind-altering substances to open her consciousness to Elune and the greater cosmos. She is more than willing to share the experience with others.
Appearance
Just a couple inches over six feet, Vesyllah is quite short for a night elf woman. She is equally petite, lacking the lithe curves many of her people are known for. Despite her small, skinny frame, she is healthy and deceptively strong. Her equally long, slender ears droop slightly, unable to fully support their own weight. Her violet skin is decorated with even darker purple pigments upon her lips, around her eyes, and in her facial tattoos. Contrasting her complexion is her long strands of straight, white hair.
She has an eye for fashion many kaldorei would find excessive. Eschewing the more naturalistic looks of her kin, she favors many of the fabrics and styles of foreigners, and is drawn to darker colors, silver jewelry, and gemstones.
Like Elune herself, Vesyllah seems to have two aspects. When embodying the Night Warrior’s justice she stands erect and menacing, wrapped in shadows with a voice like quiet thunder on a night wind thrumming through the hearts of her enemies. However, when at ease the young priestess becomes a different person entirely; she tends to slouch, her shoulders drooping, her eyes cast down, her movements languid and almost reluctant. When she speaks, her words come in a creaky drawl, frequently underscored with biting sarcasm.
Personality
Cynical ⬥ Morbid ⬥ Sarcastic ⬥ Faithful
Vesyllah is morose and jaded; she has a cynical outlook that can seem pessimistic, but she insists is merely realistic. Devoted to a fault; she is fiercely loyal to the few she lets close to her, and her piety is unquestionable, some might say to the point of zealotry.
She has an extreme and unwavering sense of justice, painted in stark blacks and whites. There is right and there is wrong, and those who do wrong must be punished. However, her sense of right and wrong is not aligned to that which is lawful and criminal. In her mind, a starving person who steals to feed their family is not wrong or evil, but rather a symptom of an injustice that caused them to starve.
Despite her sharp edges and grim outlook, or perhaps because of it, Vesyllah is not entirely cheerless. She has a dry, sarcastic wit, and while her sense of humor can be dark — even macabre — she means well by it.
Despite everything that has happened in her life, Vesyllah has a profound sense of fidelity. She may not like most of her people or even the sisters of her order, but she is dedicated to them, with only Elune herself seen as a higher (and utmost) authority. Her faith in her goddess in unshakeable. She doesn't allow herself to feel close to most people, with her tendency to see people's flaws before appreciating their virtues. But in the rare case that she let's someone into her heart, her bond of loyalty is ironclad (even if she doesn't always show it).
Romance
Vesyllah is available for romance. She doesn't seek a relationship, and is unlikely to be monogamous even if she had one. Her prickly nature makes her difficult to get close to. She is attracted to men and women of conviction. Acts of sacrifice for the betterment of the world turn her on.
At present, Vesyllah resists the idea of a long-term relationship because she believes she will die, claimed by the Night Warrior at last, once she completes her mission of vengeance. But emotions do not always cooperate with intentions.
History
Vesyllah was born in Auberdine 289 years before the Dark Portal. She was never particularly happy there, finding life in the little port settlement lackluster and devoid of meaning. She watched other people coming and going night after night on their ships and caravans, leaving Auberdine for distant places and adventures, while she was stuck with her family tending to fishing nets and peddling their catches to travelers.
Yet as hard as her family worked, they had little to show for it. Meanwhile she saw merchants living in luxury but largely at the expense of others. She adopted a cynical view of the world, feeling that notions like justice and fairness were fantasies invented by people in power to give the have-nots hope and keep them placated.
A Daughter of Elune
Vesyllah’s only escape from the doldrums of her repetitive nights was her prayer time. She found solace in her faith, despite her jaded outlook. People had failed her time and time again, but Elune had always been there for her. She always listened, always inspired her with just the right answers. Vesyllah had even been blessed with visions she was convinced had come from Elune. There were those that were skeptical that some of her visions only came after experimenting with certain herbal substances, but she believed in the value of opening one’s mind to the eternal.
In one of her visions, Vesyllah saw herself clad in gossamer robes, kneeling before a great statue of Elune, a beam of moonlight shining all around her. She could hear many female voices raised in hymns to Elune. There was no question in her mind as to the meaning of what she saw. Elune was calling her into service. Against her parents’ wishes, she left Auberdine the next evening and set out for Mount Hyjal to join the priestesses at Nordrassil.
For nearly a century Vesyllah trained, utterly devoted to her goddess. She became close with many of her sisters in the priesthood. Though her prickly personality rubbed some the wrong way, few could deny her dedication to the order — a quality that would be tested in a way she never would have imagined.
Baptism of Blood
Content Warning: The following section contains depictions of gore and the aftermath of extreme violence.
Vesyllah had been assigned to tend to a small shrine with a score of her sisters, its location kept a secret to protect a precious artifact of Elune held there. They were remote and had not received news of the start of the Third War. It wasn’t that the Sentinels didn’t try to warn them, as Vesyllah would later discover, but rather that the messenger was intercepted and murdered.
It wasn’t clear what happened that day. The attack came so suddenly, like a cloud rushing into her thoughts, fogging her vision, numbing her senses. There was a blow that knocked her to the ground, and a sharp sting in her ribs. The sting felt so small at first, but as her senses slowly trickled back and she felt the warm wetness pooling under her, that sting became agony. Her blurred vision began to clear…unveiling horror. Her sisters strewn around the shrine, some laying in their own blood, some in pieces. All dead…at least those that remained; several were unaccounted for.
Vesyllah dragged herself to the central chamber of the shrine, every movement blinding pain as she bled from her deadly wound. She had to see for herself if their sacred treasure was safe…but her worst fear was confirmed. It had been taken. It was all too clear what had happened. They were betrayed. Only their order knew the location of the shrine and what it guarded, and now several of her sisters were missing. One or more of their own had turned against them.
Looking down at her wound, Vesyllah knew she would not last long, and lacked the strength to heal herself. She looked up to where the temple opened to the sky above, and there she saw Elune gazing down upon her, barely a sliver of her eye open. Vesyllah howled defiantly, pleading with the Moon Mother not to let her die such an unjust death. The world cannot make its own justice, she argued, and committed herself to become Elune’s justice…her vengeance. She vowed that she would one day find those that had committed the atrocity at the shrine and make them pay for their crime. Then, at last, she would surrender to Elune’s embrace.
In that moment, Vesyllah saw the extraordinary. That sliver of Elune’s eye closed, turning dark. She lost consciousness shortly after, but when she awoke, a full day had passed, and her wounds were healed. Her prayers had been answered and she had a new calling now. No longer merely a sister of Elune, she must now serve as a hand of the dark aspect of the moon goddess: the Night Warrior.
Into Darkest Night
After burying the dead and praying for her fallen sisters, Vesyllah left the temple to find herself again. She was no longer truly a part of the order. While the path she was to follow now was as sacred as that of any priest of Elune, she knew that the acolytes of the Night Warrior were rare and had a way of making other kaldorei uncomfortable.
Vesyllah set out on her own. Initially she tried to find the missing priestesses, hoping to discover who had betrayed her order. But the war made tracking anyone down nearly impossible. They had vanished. Her efforts led her to get involved in a few skirmishes, and she heeded the call when Hyjal was attacked, mainly tending to and defending the wounded. But otherwise she was not a part of the overall military effort.
Since the war, she has been training in the ways of the Night Warrior, relearning a century of how she approached worship and magic. Where before she relied on Elune’s loving light, she had begun her path to wielding the Night Warrior’s cold, unforgiving shadow to punish the wicked and mete out true justice.
Relationships
|
|
Erannah Rivenbark
Erannah was Vesyllah's estranged elder sister. She never knew her well, as Erannah left Auberdine to join the Sentinels before Ves was even born. She would visit on occasion, but Vesyllah harbored resentment toward her sister for "abandoning" her. When Erannah was killed at Mount Hyjal, Vesyllah's guilt over all the time lost and things unsaid weighed heavily on her. She adopted a new name — Rivenheart — in her sister's memory. |
|
|
Larawen Rivenbark
Larawen is Vesyllah's bond-sister, Erannah's mate. Erannah never brought Larawen home with her, so Ves never had the chance to meet her…until a chance encounter in Darnassus crossed their paths. It was awkward, and yet by the end, Lara and Ves got along surprisingly well. |
|
|
Tadget Sharpgear
Tadget is equal parts a pain in Vesyllah's rear and one of the few people she genuinely admires. Not that she would ever admit the admiration. Their relationship is one of mutual teasing that might seem kinda mean to outsiders. |
|
|
Thalstan Stouthammer
The stalwart leader of the Cobalt Blade. He has proven himself a good commander with a tactical mind, and that's enough for Vesyllah to go along with his orders. |
|
|
Arthur Reeves
At first, Vesyllah wasn't sure about this pretty boy. But she's gotten accustomed to him. His intelligence and ingenuity has proven useful many times, and his genuinely good nature might have softened some of Ves's jagged edges, at least around him. |
|
|
Zaara
Zaara should annoy Vesyllah to frustration, but somehow she doesn't. Her difficulty with language can cause her to come off as simple, but she clearly isn't. If nothing else, Ves can admire the view. In truth, she admires Zaara's compassion, even if she doesn't feel deserving of it. |
Companions
 |
Tadget
A spider Vesyllah encountered while stalking a target in a catacomb. Recognizing her as a species with extremely potent venom, she adopted her and named her after the deadliest thing she knew. |
 |
Umbra
Vesyllah chose the nightsaber with the darkest coat she could find. Umbra is a typical feline, being easily bored and with little consideration for other beings, which suits Ves just fine. |
 |
Gothraku
Gothraku is a loner among his kind, perhaps due to a rather bleak and fatalistic outlook. Most likely, this is what drew him to Vesyllah, a kindred spirit. |
