RP Hooks

  • 7th Legion: Most members of the 7th Legion are familiar with Tyrrell by name at least, whether or not they're directly above/below him in the chain of command, because he's one of the few warlocks, and the only one leading a unit.
  • Slaughtered Lamb: Most people in the Stormwind/Alliance warlock community think of Tyrrell as both a source of pride - "See, warlocks can be useful!" — and an annoyance (he thinks he's too good to hang out with us).
  • Mt. Hyjal: He was very prominent in the defense of Mt. Hyjal. At the time, he was a frost mage, and his Blizzards were infamous. There were rumors that he had a thing for Wyrmbane (if so, Wyrmbane was oblivious).
  • Lordaeron Nobility: Those familiar with the Lordaeron House of Nobles might remember that his father held a seat there, and might even know of his sister Ursula, who stood to inherit. He was the more or less irrelevant Mage Brother.

Appearance

Eyes like shards from a blue glacier, cheekbones like… sharper and whiter pieces of the same glacier. Seriously, you could shave your legs with his cheekbones. His jet-black hair boasts one silver patch above his left eye, echoed in the brow on the same side, because he isn’t already dramatic enough, possibly? He usually wears a neat beard, which is also touched with silver.

When he is not wearing his 7th Legion uniform, he is wearing black. Only black. None more black. He really wants you to understand that he is Scary and Dark.

Personality

Sharp • Passionate • Selfless • Devious

TL:DR - Zath isn't bad, he's just drawn that way.

Everything about Zath Tyrrell exudes cold arrogance and detachment, from the way he grooms and dresses himself to the dry barbed comments he aims at everyone. He leans into his reputation as cold, distant, likely to turn and eviscerate you verbally at the slightest provocation.

But the funny thing about Count/Captain Zath/Zathary TEER-uhl/tuh-RELL is that almost nothing he shows you is anywhere near the truth. He is just this side of a pathological liar; he will do a thing in the most roundabout and underhanded way possible even when the direct route would suffice. He will tell you he's an orphan after you meet his family. Then you will find out the people you met that he said were his family were no relation to him whatsoever, and so maybe he was telling the truth the first time. He is a living, breathing continuity error.

Why do people put up with him? Because he's a hell of a soldier. He works tirelessly, asks for nothing, and his missions have a phenomenal success rate. What else is he good at? No one knows. There are very few people who remember him before he tried anything else at all, and those people aren't telling. Maybe they're afraid to. Maybe they just forgot he existed.

There is one group of people who will defend him from any verbal or physical assualt, and that is his 6th Expeditionary Unit, particularly the ones who have been with him from the beginning. Their loyalty is the only signal to the average observer that mayyyybe he's not quite as bad as he tries to convince everyone he is.

If you are one of the rare handful of people who manages to peel away his outer layer of thorns and frostbite, you will find a secret bleeding heart that truly and passionately wants the best for everyone around him… everyone except himself. Beneath his fairly consistent exterior of chill disapproval, his emotions are savage, raw, and highly mutable. He can be ready to murder you and your descendents one moment, but a single heartfelt, vulnerable apology will turn his spine to gelatin and his heart into a shivering wet kitten.

Per Tadget Slipshank, scout of the 6th E.U.:

"Zath Tyrrell is the kind of guy who makes you feel like if he drew a circle you might just hop into it and do his bidding, and you might feel pretty okay about the whole thing. His disapproval is withering, his compliments rare but potent."

Per Lady Sintha Fallon:

"Captain Tyrrell was a bloody pufferfish who would attempt to quell an emergency of his own with nothing but his gloved hands and an icy look, and probably die in outraged silence if he failed."

This character is romanceable.

History

Known by most: Tyrrell is Lordaeronian nobility of some kind, a veteran of Hyjal, and a longtime friend of High Commander Halford Wyrmbane. Tyrrell was a mage during the third war, but after seeing firsthand the power that the warlocks of the Legion wielded, he decided to fight felfire with felfire, as it were.

Known by some: Tyrrell is the second child of a Lordaeronian Count. His elder sister was expected to inherit the title, and so he went to Dalaran to study magic. During the third war, he joined Jaina Proudmoore's forces along with his childhood friend Halford Wyrmbane. When Wyrmbane's Lordaeronian 7th Legion split off into an elite special operations regiment, Tyrrell was given command of an expeditionary unit, and performed well enough that he managed to hang onto his command even after he unexpectedly joined the ranks of those adopting the fel magic of the enemy to use in service of the Alliance. The rest of his family died in the events of the Third War.

Known by VERY few: Tyrrell's mother was assassinated shortly before the Third War. No one knows why or who assassinated her, though it is rumored that she was doing something that would have endangered her family's seat on the Lordaeronian House of Nobles. During the war, the Tyrrell estate was attacked by ghouls. Tyrrell's elder sister Ursula fled, abandoning the family, and is now presumed dead. Tyrrell tried to get his injured father to safety, but the old man was already plagued, and Tyrrell eventually had to kill him in self-defense. After that, Tyrrell joined the army, though it was already clear the war was not winnable.

Relationships

Sgt. Fallon
6th EU. Fallon is Tyrrell's siege engineer, and also the younger sister of one of his dearest friends. She is the frequent recipient of the second-sharpest side of Tyrrell's tongue.
Sgt. Saion
6th EU. Tyrrell's best melee fighter: the largest imaginable puppy with the largest imaginable sword. Frequent recipient of the sharpest side of Tyrrell's tongue.
Sgt. Greywatch
6th EU. Scout. Tyrrell speaks to Greywatch only when necessary, and rarely looks at her when speaking to her. No one is sure why. Maybe his neck just doesn't bend down.
Halliday Tyrrell
A former student from Tyrrell's days as a frost mage in Dalaran. She studied with him for approximately a year before Tyrrell left to join the Lordaeronian 7th Legion. Now suddenly she is his wife. Only a handful of people know why. She does not appear pregnant. It's a head scratcher.
Vice Admiral Siamus Fallon
An occasional champion of Tyrrell's political stances in the House of Nobles. The Vice Admiral and the Captain are known by many to be extremely close, and when not deployed they are often seen in one another's company.
Duchess Avrenne Esprit Fallon
Known by many to have been briefly courting Tyrrell before she married Commodore Fallon, and an advocate for his Warlock Ethics Bureau. They remain good friends.
Lena Coit
Formerly his student in demonology. Even formerlier, he hired her for certain services during the war. Now they are partners in forming the Warlock Ethics Bureau. That's not ironic at all.
Pippinlopper
A respected scholar of demonology who has done Tyrrell the favor of joining him on the WEB's leadership council. The two have an extremely harmonious relationship that never ventures within a mile of the personal.
Elohad Ference
Member of the House of Nobles, founder of Cobalt Company, Knight of the Silver Hand, and most relevant to Tyrrell, a member of the WEB's leadership council. Very useful when people need to be convinced of things.
Niris Ference
Ference's wife, a priestess and alchemist of some renown, and a member of the WEB leadership council. She and Tyrrell exchange occasional lightly barbed comments in meetings, but seem to have genuine mutual respect.
Samarith Felbinder
A rather impertinent young woman who came to Tyrrell with questions about an innovative and intriguing (if currently unsuccessful) demonology project. Eventually she even listened to the answers.
Gausanders Spellbond
A strangely shy and evasive young warlock and W.E.B. member who attended an open house with questions about other forms of magic. Seems to be investigating some promising areas of study, and Tyrrell is interested in following up on his results.
Bertrand Aspenwood
A member of the 7th Legion's 11th Expeditionary Unit, and the first friend Tyrrell ever made outside his own unit. His reasons for befriending the young man were somewhat devious, but in the end the effort was its own reward.
Priscilla Moore
Bertrand's eternal fiancee, a gifted painter. Tyrrell does his best to curb his barbed tongue in her presence. He has not only sat for a portrait with her but owns a number of her works.
Lady Cressidha
The perfect woman. Did not seem to notice that he was attempting to court her. It's fine, they can just talk about Old Gods and auroraweave. Gifted in tailoring and enchanting as well as the arcane.
Colson Aspenwood
Lady Cressidha's twin brother, a paladin. The two are similar in appearance in temperament, and most often seen together. Tyrrell's relationship to him appears cordial.
Sgt. Tadget Slipshank
Former scout for his expeditionary unit, currently attempting to get back in physical shape after a difficult pregnancy and childbirth.
Sil Silentstep
Briefly served as scout in the 6th EU until Wrathgate. Did a respectable job, but then, well, Wrathgate.
Siege Engineer Kerlo Quarterflash
Member of the 9th E.U. Tyrrell was professionally aware of Quarterflash for some time, but after they both attended a charity gala together in Year 26 they became something very like friends.
Devon Tennerow
Checks on Tyrrell's lands for him from time to time, since Tyrrell is literally never there.
Dara Tennerow
Devon Tennerow's almost painfully naive younger sister, who will not stop calling him Count Tyrrell.
Lady Alaisa
A friend of Sintha's who is also apparently friends with a death knight. Not particularly sociable, at least not with him.
Nunuzac
A draenei shaman who attended a W.E.B open house and had some pointed but fair and intelligent questions.
Nesselos
A friend of Nunuzac's and another draenei shaman who showed up late to the same open house.
Merelda Veyne
First cousin on his father's side, born and raised in Gilneas. He met her once, in year 19 ADP, when he entrusted her mother, his Aunt Zura, with the care and protection of Keiley Boles' orphaned younger sister.
