- Former Kirin Tor: Sam was a rising star in Dalaran before the Third War. Those who were in the Kirin Tor at that time could possibly recognize her.
- Lordaeron Refugee: There is a certain camaraderie among Lordaeronians these days. Are you from the Eastweald, by chance? Corin's Crossing?
Appearance
Samarith is tall and slender, her long limbs giving a lanky impression. Her dark brown hair is nearly black, appearing so in most lighting. She favors light, sometimes slinky clothing that shows off her dark caramel skin enough to tease. She appears at ease in most every situation, usually finding something or someone to lean against, if not lounge upon.
Personality
IMAGINATIVE • PROUD • PROVOCATIVE • ROGUISH
Samarith is a woman of many faces: rakish scoundrel, mysterious witch, inventive artificer, provocative seductress, vengeful demon wrangler. All of these are her true faces. She is a bold woman, highly independent and prone to dramatic gestures. She will flirt, cajole, bend the truth, and manipulate if she must to achieve her aims, but her motives are usually benign…or at least as relatively harmless as acquiring a free drink when she is short of coin.
Sam may have some loose morals, but she has some very strict ethical views, particularly when it comes to demons. Her seething hatred for demons and the Burning Legion could melt steel. Even as a warlock, her use of demons is nothing more than convenience; they are tools to be wielded and discarded.
History
Samarith Renfarrow grew up in the Eastweald of Lordaeron, in a busy little trade town called Corin’s Crossing. She was a bright girl with big dreams, and just enough audacity to make them come true. When that traveling representative of the Violet Citadel came through town, Sam demanded an audience with her. Though the girl was dismissed at first, when she flung a small fireball to get the mage’s attention (quickly deflected, of course), the sorceress took notice of the self-taught child.
Boldness served Samarith well in the Kirin Tor. She excelled in magic, and developed an early expertise in a number of subjects, including numerology, astronomy, and demonology — the latter raising some eyebrows, but her studies always remained academic and never practical. While her mentor needed to instill caution and restraint in the girl, her appetite for recognition and advancement opened many doors for her. More than a few in the Citadel saw a future for her on the Council of Six.
That future was not meant to be. When the plague broke out and the Scourge began to ravage her homeland, Samarith left Dalaran against orders to get her family to safety. She arrived in Corin’s Crossing just before the Scourge attacked. She brought all of her magical might to bear against the undead to protect her home, but it was not enough. They were too many and she was not an experienced battle mage. By the time she caught up with her fleeing family, her parents were dead. Her elder sister, Anira, was dying, holding her husband’s body. Sam’s younger brother and sister, Brendon and Lindy, hid nearby. As the Scourge ghouls approached, Anira begged Sam to take the younger ones and run. She screamed to get the ghouls’ attention as her siblings fled.
Samarith and her younger siblings made for the foothills to escape, where they hid for many days, making their way slowly to safety. There they came across another group of refugees who were planning a counterstrike. These survivors were led by a charismatic man called Lorgan who promised them a way to defeat the undead. Lorgan began to show the young humans the ways of the warlock, teaching them how to summon demons they could unleash on the Scourge. Sam was wary, but knew enough of demonology to see that he was schooled himself. Desperate, she went along with Lorgan’s plan.
Being the most skilled arcanist among the refugees, Samarith believed she could handle the power better than the others. Her arrogance would cost her dearly. She summoned a demon that she lost control of. It attacked the circle, and before she and Lorgan managed to put it down, it had killed three of their number…including Brendon. Broken by what she’d done, Samarith decried warlockery and insisted the demons couldn’t be controlled. However, Lorgan’s hold on the others was too strong at that point, and he cast Samarith from the circle. But in her defiance, Sam briefly pierced Lorgan’s deception and saw the truth of what he was: a dreadlord. It was all a ruse to corrupt these desperate victims.
Knowing she had no hope of defeating a nathrezim on her own, Samarith fled with Lindy. They managed to stay out of the fighting and made their way south to Dalaran, where she faced rebuke for defying orders. Nevertheless, given the circumstances, her sister was given refuge in the city. Sam, meanwhile, was placed under arcane probation for her dalliance with fel magic.
When Dalaran itself came under attack, Sam and her sister barely escaped with their lives again. First Arthas came, leading the Scourge to take the city. Then Archimonde himself unleashed his magical might, bringing down the great spires of Dalaran in seconds. Once again, she watched as her home, her family, everything she loved was destroyed…and she started to understand that the Burning Legion was the true threat; the Scourge was just one of many weapons in their arsenal.
In the chaos of the city’s destruction, Sam stole several books of demonology from the ruins. Fleeing again with Lindy, the sisters disappeared, eventually turning up in Stormwind where she would leave Lindy in the care of other Lordaeronian refugees, promising to visit as often as she could. Samarith herself needed time to study. Lorgan had taught her one important lesson: demons could be controlled. But she had no interest in making allies of them. She wanted only to destroy them. She would use them the same way they used the Scourge; she would make demons her weapons to destroy demons, and then cast them aside just as easily. But she needed the means to ensure they did not just return to the Twisting Nether to come back and terrorize mortals again another day. She needed more power.
Samarith spent several years in study of warlockery, both on her own and among others, but never attaching herself strongly to any one warlock or group. She would never again allow herself to fall under the sway of a charismatic cult leader. The young sorceress did not limit herself to just one branch of magical study, though. Just as devoted study of the ways of the Kirin Tor had failed her, she felt that focusing too narrowly on the path of the warlock would be just as great a folly. She sought out esoteric knowledge wherever she could, in the broad field of “improper” magic the Citadel labeled “witchcraft”. There were many secrets to be gleaned from witches…but also prices to be paid.
Samarith never truly identified as a warlock, and eventually preferred to call herself a witch. Though the term had its own baggage, she found she quite liked how it unsettled people, yet also confused and intrigued them at the same time. She came to exist on the fringes of warlock society, known to some as a maverick who often disparages their ways. Still, she frequently needed to rely on other warlocks for information or supplies, so she tried not to burn too many bridges.
Relationships
Tabetha Samarith spent several years in Dustwallow Marsh as one of Tabetha's apprentices, learning secrets from the mysterious witch.
Lena Coit This delightfully charming warlock bought me a drink when that dullard Jarel wouldn't put one on my tab. I really should have arranged to see her again. She was awfully cute.
Demons
Samarith used to bind demons to fetishes, but when that method began to fail, she was forced to bind them to herself lest those breaking through her enchantments overtake her soul entirely. She is extremely selective about which demons she binds, choosing them for qualities that make them easier to control.
Gakyal Gakyal greatly angered his Imp Mother, who would surely devour him if she got her claws on him. Threats to send him back to his brood keep Gakyal cowering and obedient.
Hathkresh In Hathkresh, Samarith found a voidwalker with a deep loathing of demons, stemming from the Burning Legion's practice of ripping voidwalkers away from their natural state and pressing them into service as soldiers. Hathkresh willingly submits to Samarith, knowing his hatred of demons is matched by hers.
Aelneri Aelneri has fallen in love with Samarith, as many sayaad are known to do with their masters. While this can be a dangerous situation, Sam ensured Aelneri has a constant rival to focus her jealousy on in the form of the incubus, Rokomen.
Rokomen Like the succubus Aelneri, Rokomen is in love with Samarith. He was chosen specifically to be a rival to Aelneri, so the two can have a jealous conflict between them, keeping their attention off of mortals.
Flaamyn As felhounds go, Flaamyn is a very lazy demon pupper. It much prefers to have meals offered up to it rather than hunting for itself.
Kirfaran Mo'arg are exceedingly loyal to the Burning Legion, so Samarith had to find the dumbest one she could to make it easier to manipulate.
