RP Hooks
- SI:7 — Roper was a top agent once, and some might still know him by his agent name 'Roper.'
- The Ebon Blade — Roper has a plan to elevate the Ebon Blade up high enough to become a normal part of life in Azeroth, safe from the mobs with pitchforks. The longer this goes on, the more likely your character can have heard of him or Syarra, the leader of the Death Knight PR team.
- Syarra — Roper's wife and the leader of his group. Make her your problem, Roper is your next problem.
- Colson Aspenwood — Those who know the paladin might find Roper's reaction to the name is anything but neutral.
- The Scourge — The fight to keep the Scourge from destroying Azeroth goes on, and Roper will not quit a mission that isn't finished.
- Cobalt Company — Roper has a strong interest in Cobalt, and every connection counts. If your character is an IC member or an associate, he will be motivated to make a good impression and work together.
Appearance
At 5'6", Roper has the lean, tightly muscled build of an acrobat or gymnast. Unremarkable facial features made him an excellent spy, where he was able to be forgettable when he needed to be. Since being raised by the Lich King, his eyes have the telltale blue glow of a Death Knight, but they were once a dark enough brown to be mistaken for black when he was alive. His skin, once a warm brown, is now a grayish tone that leaves no room for interpretation of whether he's alive or dead. His hair is a mix of black and streaks of white, making it look salt-and-pepper gray. His hands are covered in scars, and several of his fingernail beds look as though at some point the nails split and they healed incorrectly — he rarely exposes his hands, preferring to keep his gauntlets on.
Ordinarily, Roper keeps his helm over his face, or wears a leather hood, when he's in public, hiding his face. Some of it is to conceal how dead he appears, but even when he's openly acting as a death knight, he rarely shows his face. His voice is ordinary, particularly among those who don't know him well; those who remain around him longer will note that his natural voice has a husky sound to it (Voice Claim: Christian Kane), a remnant of his life.
Personality
Focused • Ambitious • Funny • Impatient
ALIGNMENT: CHAOTIC NEUTRAL
Roper is a man of drive and purpose with a finely tempered level of ambition. He was well known when he was alive for being almost relentless in his pursuit of a goal, and for putting a mission objective above everything else, including his own life, and even in death that has held true. Roper prefers to lead from the shadows, driving from behind another used as a front to test the waters and provide someone to take the fall if necessary, leaving Roper free to act as he must to achieve his ultimate goal. In death, the line between focus and ruthlessness has become far more blurry, and Roper's impatience and irritation with incompetence builds faster to anger and intimidating rage than before.
He was difficult for the Death Knight instructors to break in full, having trained for so many years to survive and withstand torture, but there was no escaping the Eternal Hunger and the drive to survive at all costs to finish the mission. After being freed of the Lich King's control, Roper found himself clinging to every single possible greater mission in a desperate attempt to stay in control of himself and his newfound existence. In doing so, he teamed up with Syarra Sunstrike, a former paladin sin'dorei woman. Over time, the formed a bond, then a friendship, and ultimately a romantic relationship.
Roper and Syarra.
Part of Roper's skill as a spy was in his ability to put together complex puzzles of information, and fill in the blanks accurately. He has a natural intelligence even with limited education — he did not learn to read until his late teens, and his education was focused on what he had to know for a mission. He might be able to play a single violin song, but he can't tell you about the history of the violin or how to read music.
He makes intuitive leaps, often through an instinct for information and connected pieces, but he's not one to reveal his thoughts often. He affects more of a personality that many death knights, but much of it is an act, or exaggerated from the memory of personhood. Not all of it is, however. Some pieces remain of a man who had a charming crooked smile and a good laugh. If the smile is cruel, and the laugh rarer now, they're still there in some form at least.
This Character Is Married In An Undying Relationship And Cannot Be Romanced
Roper is in an undying, eternal marriage with Syarra Sunstrike.
Roper's romance is a Dark Romance. He will not stop being a Death Knight even with strong feelings for someone — there will be elements of consensual pain, as an unavoidable aspect of someone who doesn't feel emotions physically without that energy exchange.
Roper is attracted to people who are competent, driven, focused, practical, confident, funny, and restrained. He does not find vulnerability, indecisiveness, shyness, or excessive cruelty attractive. He will not be attracted to someone who feels they can 'change him' or 'make him Good,' as he is incapable of both as a Death Knight; people who are too forgiving of his darker side will find that Roper rejects their advances. People who are only interested in the darkest side of him, however, will find Roper equally rebuffed. He may not be good, but he is not evil. He will be attracted to people who are willing to love the monster he is, complicated as that may be. Gender plays no part in who he is attracted to. He can be attracted to any race, and most ages.
As a partner, he is very jealous, and possessive, and he will not stand for being seen as someone's 'second choice.' He has no interest in people already in a relationship. In life he was predominantly aromantic, with a single exception. In death, the only possible romance is romantic with possible physical elements, as he doesn't experience certain urges any longer. He does not fall for someone easily, and he will not let those feelings go any easier. His loyalty to his person is extreme, and is a blurry line between possession and love at any given time. His feelings may be real, and they are sometimes not fully tethered enough to his soul to be love, but his actions will remain consistent. He will burn the world for the person he loves.
No casual romance option.
History
BIRTHDAY/DEATHDAY: JANUARY 1ST, YEAR -04
Roper began his life the eighth son of two people who should never have had any children, and he was one of only two of his siblings who made it to adulthood. Found by Mathias Shaw after he successfully, on a dare, impersonated a member of SI:7 well enough to fool the man who had trained the agent, Roper started his (official) career as a spy at the tender age of eighteen. Known for his uncanny ability to impersonate speech patterns, pitch, tone, and accents, as well as a finely honed mimicry of body language, Roper rose quickly in the ranks of SI:7 as an agent with an eye on being part of the leadership of the organization.
Well into his successful career, in Year 23, Roper was given a mission of staggering importance that risked everything on the agent's ability to carry it nearly alone. He was placed within the Alliance Army under the command of a young Knight-Lieutenant who had proven himself capable of working within the exacting parameters of SI:7's missions — Colson Aspenwood. Despite falling for the Knight-Lieutenant, Roper chose to put the mission first, as he always had before. Unfortunately, a chance moment's slip on wet stone caused the agent to be fatally wounded, too far away from any source of aid, and he died; but the mission was a success.
Agent Roper, alive, Year 23
His body was recovered by SI:7 after a day of quiet searching. The body went missing before he was properly buried, stolen by a necromancer. Roper's body was raised and preserved, until eventually he was called back in full as a Death Knight to the Lich King's command. After the Battle of Light's Hope Chapel, he turned to the Ebon Blade, some part of him returning as best it could to the type of man the Alliance would have once called a 'hero.'
Roper took part of the initial venture into Northrend on the Ebon Blade ship Revenge, and has been working to further his agenda of public relations for the faction as well as keep the world from imploding or exploding in the meantime.
On July 13th, Year 27, he and Syarra were married by Mordecai Aspenwood, witnessed by Alaisa Lysander and Aszera Sunstrike in a private ceremony. It isn't legally filed on either Horde or Alliance sides, to prevent the potential threat of either being seen as affiliated with someone across the faction lines despite the Ebon Blade's neutrality. Roper took on Syarra's last name "Sunstrike" following the marriage.
Roper has participated in several large scale battles — the Sunwell, Angrathar the Wrathgate, the War Against The Nightmare, the end of Malygos, and the final assault against Arthas The Lich King. His helm is usually on, but his saronite armor is notable, he spoke often enough for his voice to be recognizable, and in some cases his face was visible.
Aliases he once used known by now:
-Private Roger Reynolds (a soldier in the Alliance army)
-Tibault Beringer (a genteel merchant class young man who lived with his aunt)
-Shale (a former member of a Stormwind street gang known as The Vultures)
-Harland (Grey) (a Westfall lad, not particularly well educated, but a good farm boy)
-Evander Favre (his original birth name, never used again after age 18)
Relationships
Syarra (Sya) Sunstrike
His wife who he trusts as implicitly as he can trust anyone. He loves her, as one of the few darkly bright spots of his (un)life. He's positioned her to take the spotlight lead of his plan to drive the Ebon Blade's reputation up to where they can survive among the living of Azeroth. They do a regular Tuesday Night Candle Tragic Past Contemplation, where they talk about the past and continue to build their strategy for the future, and currently live together in Kaskala. |
Alaisa (Mist(ake)) Lysander
Back when Roper was alive and in SI:7, they were best friends. He can't remember her now, except in a single uncomfortable flash of memory. He called her affectionately 'Mistake' as a play on her Agent name 'Mist,' and she knew him socially as Tibault, one of his few identities that he used when he was being his actual self. She's his best friend, was his Best Woman at his wedding, and the only living person he fully and complete trusts, as much as he's capable of it. |
Azera "Aze" (Ace) Sunstrike
Syarra's younger sister, an asset who has the power to help establish a legal precedence for the Ebon Blade and provide Syarra with a link to other living assets. She's grown on Roper in her own right, and they oscillate between imminent violence and comedic duo of bickering siblings. He's given her a few gifts, and recently put in more effort to pull her to their side, and under their direct connection. |
Colson Aspenwood
The Knight-Lieutenant that Roper fell in love with in Year 23. Once, Roper would have done almost anything to feel Colson's Light and touch. Now, the only thing that truly satisfies the Eternal Hunger is Colson's suffering. |
Lady Cressidha Aspenwood
Colson's little older sister, a mage, a tailor, and an echanter, who made Roper's current non-armor wardrobe. He's made himself useful. |
Mordecai
Colson's husband, who seems to be a workable intermediary between Roper and Colson. The initial envy and hate he felt has faded into an odd gratitude. |
Mourn
A Death Knight that Roper has cooperated with in the past for his efforts to locate Ralaea Westwind, and determine what has been going on with a Death Knight known as Mondragon. He's joined their cause, but it's been a struggle with the growing relationship with Mourn and Ralaea, with the latter being unwilling to work with the rest of the death knights. |
Theris Lysander
Mistake's younger brother, a death knight with exceptional control. Working in Duskwood/Darkshire, was useful in Stratholme. A possible leverage or possible hindrance getting past his father with the House of Nobles. |
Forge/Icaros
One of the Ebon Blade knights that collected under Syarra's leadership while they were Scourge, the draenei took on the name Forge after visiting a forge for their mission when he could no longer recall his true name. Later, he got his name back, but the moniker works just as well. Has a connection to a living priestess, keeps it cultivated. |
Kiekel Niftywire
A gnome early recruited to work with Syarra's growing team of Ebon Blade knights who can and will work with the living, and actively cultivate assets with a clean work. |
Vice Admiral Siamus Fallon
The first person of Stormwind to really make an effort at finding a path for citizenship for Death Knights in the Kingdom of Stormwind. Siamus puts together clear, simple missions with achievable objectives and well-defined parameters to operate in. Roper would work with him anytime, and intends to cultivate the man as an asset. |
Tabiana Lynds
An Argent Crusade asset connected to Mourn and Westwind, who didn't stab Syarra, which is a good sign. The Sunstrikes have been working with her to train to fight against a death knight, an important edge she needs, as she's a target from one of Kaela's squad: Tala, Tabiana's sister. |
Briellen Clay
The Argent Crusade contact, through Syarra. She was the healer on duty when Roper brought Alaisa in suffering from hypothermia, and the one they coordinated with for their excursion into Stratholme. At the Rescue Ops, Briellen died for Syarra to survive, which means Roper owes the paladin a favor. |
Captain Jocoza Sparkwire
The captain of Cobalt Company who he's established a working relationship with at least. The alliance isn't exactly warm, but it's functional. |
That Paladin Who Tried To Kill Me/Vond Satterly
A paladin that Roper encountered in the wilds of the Plaguelands. Roper watched his gryphon plummet out of the air unexpectedly, and went to provide aid to leverage later only to find that a case of mistaken identity nearly led to Roper's Holy Light evaporation. Roper threw hands and left. This is fine. Roper has worked with the paladin multiple times, and has been part of the effort of the Argent Crusade's attempt to normalize working alongside the Ebon Blade. |
That Paladin's Priest/Etone Greenote
A Confessor, and part of the Argent Crusade, with that paladin. Used shadow to heal Roper and Syarra, which is interesting. Worked well with getting the Argent Crusade/Ebon Blade initiative going, and seemed to be less hostile than Satterly after the rescue ops. |
Celaven Evensong
Someone Syarra used to know in life, a friend good enough for an attachment to a gift to linger after death. Roper hates that, but he does like having another priest in their web, and Celaven has actively passed on information and asked for assistance for his girlfriend's safety. |
Florande
Celaven's younger sister, a druid that Roper met for the first time in the Nightmare Emerald Dream. She left him a present after, which is a prized possession. |
Nish?
The inexplicably horny gnome that built Roper's flying machine. She's oddly friendly, and insists that he's a 'hottie.' He's turned her down for anything more than business, but it hasn't seemed to deter her willingness to work with the knight. |
Coriene Bloodsong
Sister to one of The Other Syarra's squad members who died permanently in the Plaguelands, the mage is politically involved in the Kirin Tor, and a very valuable asset. She has passed along vital information about the Nightmare, and Roper owes her a favor for it. |
Kitharian du Lac
Paladin who seems to be amicable to both Syarra and Aze, so Roper has no problem with her. She seems likely to work with them if asked. |
Emerine Nightvine
Ralaea's bodyguard when Mourn was told to stop stalking Westwind, the night elf went from neutral wary to willing to work with the Ebon Blade she's met with. Roper has contacted her twice now, and she's done exactly as she's been told, fully within mission parameters. 10/10 would hire again. |
Brendol Westwind
Ralaea Westwind's younger brother. He's affiliated with Mourn, and seems to think Syarra was being nice to him. Roper's not going to correct that, especially not with a useful asset. Ended up caught by Kaela going after Jenzelle. |
Enaliya Nightwhisper
The death knight that killed Syarra, no matter how paladin-y Syarra puts it. She's joined up in the death knights working for rep, though she doesn't yet realize that Syarra is the one at the head of it. |
Estel Herald
A Cobalt ally, who has passed on valuable intel, and been friendly enough to justify considering her an asset. She's a priest. She's also definitely not just a priest. |
Almeiria Fey
What is the Church of Light even doing with priestesses these days?? Shadow priestess who was willing to make a deal to get Mourn a witness. Did some sort of shadow mind thing in exchange for not messing with Alynnra. Was at the Onslaught Mission. Laughed at one of his jokes. |
Fionette Crawford
A reclusive Ebon Blade warrior, used to be a paladin. She won't work directly with the living, but she follows orders of the Ebon Blade and works clean. |
"Sophie Hagstrom"
One of Kaela's spies who flipped after the Rescue Ops. She's in Stormwind, and affiliated with someone else now, no longer a free agent. Definitely still a spy. |
Elowel Aro'ephel
Syarra's employer for a Scourge consultant of the Crimson Coterie. The sin'dorei paladin is pragmatic enough to realize Syarra's worth, and is an asset for a Horde mercenary group. That fact might no longer be the connection it used to be. |
Vindicator Pericleia
Worked with her on now two missions, Rescue Ops and Malygos. Sturdy as all hell. Seemed to be willing to work with death knights without feeling the need to threaten them with the Light's vengeance. That's a great start. Further investigation into how much of an asset she can be is warranted. |
Silvestre Silentstep
Connected to Aze, and now Fallon. Scared of Roper, but he managed to hold it together for a chat. As long as the guy doesn't do anything stupid like run, Roper will manage the urge to hunt him down, and hopefully with time convert him to an asset. |
Sintha/Moth
A former SI:7 agent, now 7th Legion. Mistake likes her, enough to make her tangentially Roper's concern. Fallon's sister as well. |
Averlena "Lena" Coit
Roper has no memory of her exactly, but he knows who she had to have been: someone Roger Reynolds made sure was part of his cover identity in the army in early Year 23. She's in Cobalt Company, and encountered "Reynolds" in Wintergarde after the Wrathgate. He's told her and revealed himself to her, and she works in Fallon's Fleet. Recently, he saw her again, this time in the field with her first time with a dreadlord. |
Velrin Silverbloom
Celaven's girl, possibly hunted, possibly not. Worked with her during the Scarlet Onslaught Mission. |
Ranneowyn Dawnstrider
Dancer, part of a party thrown by Elowel, and Syarra made attempts at attracting her as an asset. They're still waiting to see how that pans out. |
Briyanthe Roseshine
Weird priestess, believes she's been chosen because of a dream. Light priests can be like that. More importantly, she's been useful to Syarra, and might be an asset. |
Jenzelle Halveris
One of Kaela's targets. Priestess. |
Sir Dane the Red
The knight that Roper's worked with before and seen around Kaskala. Dane thinks he talks too much, so Roper makes sure to talk even more when he's around. |
Alynnra Mondragon/The Watcher/Some Poet
Kaela's sister, with more than one person inside her. Roper sorta knows the feeling, but this person doesn't seem to be in control of it at all. She passed on vital information about Kaela though, leading to a successful Rescue Ops, so she's not an enemy. Yet. |
Duchess Avrenne Esprit Fallon
Fallon's wife. Canny woman, kept Roper on his toes as Tibault Beringer, enough so that he doesn't remember her at all. Duchess of Lordaeron, has some influence over Fallon according to Mistake. |
Chuck Silversong
Anyone who had anything to do with the Lordaeron scene knew of the bard, and Roper's no exception. Maybe someday he'll get to meet her. Unless he already met her, in which case, it might be weird that he doesn't remember it… |
Ralaea Westwind
The mission objective to locate that Colson secured Roper to help Harvey with, who then became embroiled with the efforts to find and eliminate Kaela Mondragon. After she learned just how death knights can and will operate, she turned away from the group, and tried to bluff blowing up the place they held the Toymaker, with Syarra inside it. Now she's Mourn's problem, and if Mourn can't handle it, then she'll be Roper's problem. No one wants that. |
Corduin Bennett
One of those who followed Syarra while they were Scourge, she has since proved to not yet be an asset. She believes that they should control the living with fear, a dangerous position to take, and Roper has steered the living away from her whenever possible. |
Kaela Mondragon/Unprintable Names
The pain in Roper's assets, Kaela has served the Scourge's goals too much to ever be forgiven. Her desire to make more death knights means she needs to be eliminated. The mission to take her down remains in progress. |
