RP Hooks

  • New Warlock: Melancholy has become a new warlock, apprenticing to Averlena Shine, of the Fallon Fleet.
  • W.E.B. Trained: An officially stamped W.E.B. warlock trained warlock, Melancholy has all her paperwork in place, and has potential connections to other warlocks.
  • Duskwood Nobility: The Grimlockes are a minor House of very little political importance, notable mostly in the social scene for Lady Miserie, who loves company, and throws parties whenever she can.

Appearance

A 5'10" (6" with the boots) gothic young woman with long, riotously curly black hair (dyed to the shade); a prominent nose; a willowy, slim limbed build; and light honey brown eyes. Melancholy dresses to create a specific "book cover" for potential readers, informative of her personality and origin — she is from Duskwood, a small noble house, and she is proud of it.

Her style of clothing often attempts to lend more of a sense of curves to an otherwise lithesome form — peplum tucked waists and frills, long corselettes with flared hips, tiered layered fronts, and rounded skirts. She's almost never spotted without a little hat and a spill of a veil of some sort over her eyes. Black is the main choice, but always with a pop of color; these days that color is a rich, dark, and warm leaning purple, though she used to be known for red.

She's often found with a focusing athame dagger and a staff-cane, as a warlock. Those who can sense magic will sense a constantly maintained fel armor over herself. And recently, she's begun wearing perfume (Purple Melancholia) which gives her a scent of lavender, cardamom, amber, and a hint of coconut.

She speaks with a cultured Stormwind accent, often using an extensive vocabulary with a flair for the dramatic. She walks with a self-assured confidence, and is more than comfortable with her height, but once seated or relaxed, she's prone to slouching and lounging.

"Polite and respectful and absolutely used to getting her own way." - Lena Shine

Melancholy has always been aware of her name and her place in the world, and she believes that it was fated from the start. That's not to say she's a passive passenger on a predestined ride — she sees it as an exploration of destiny to discover, and she pushes and pulls against the tides of fate, deciding which things are the ones meant to be accepted, and those meant to be rejected, often through what could be seen as arbitrary understandings of her path gleaned from her perception of events. Prone to seeing everything as a part of a greater pattern, it's left her with a tendency towards superstitions in general; the ones she keeps are those that seem — to her — logical and rational.

She has a sense of justice and fairness, with an idea about truly balanced scales and ways to even out the inherent chaos of the world. It isn't Fair by the Law or Rules, but her own concepts, and she is often certain of her interpretations. However, part of that fair mind is that she is willing to wait and listen to others, and what they know or believe, even if it's different from her own, before she will make her own decision or judgement. Once she does have it though, she is firm, unless someone has something new to reconsider.

Early on in her life, Melancholy decided not to be melancholy, and she hasn't been — for most of her life. It doesn't mean she hasn't ever felt sorrow, but that she usually works deliberately to encourage and drive her feelings in specific directions, and she lives her life purposefully in action to her ideals. She has always rationalized and controlled her emotional states as someone learned to self-regulate early on in life, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a temper or no strong feelings. Her life until a point kept her sheltered from a great deal of pain and suffering, despite the dramatic names of her family, and her ability to handle the increase in those tragedies has pressed her coping mechanisms to their maximum, with varying degrees of success and failure.

Still, she is often able to self-reflect on her actions and words, and when she comes to a conclusion that she has acted wrongly, she'll apologize, and she will admit fault.

As the youngest of her House, deeply loved by her family, and with a stable, comfortable wealth, Melancholy is a bit spoiled, and a little selfish. She had a good heart, and wants to do good — more than ever now — but she hasn't finished growing up all the way just yet, and it shows; it's one of the few aspects of the self she hasn't managed to see quite so clearly or reflect fully on yet.

There are also other things she believes about herself that may or may not be true, and still more that certainly aren't, but nevertheless now play a major role in what she does.

That self-awareness and belief in her destiny both influenced her decision to become a warlock, and determines what sort of warlock she is going to be.

She loves poetry, chrome bicycles, and she plays the French (Lordaeron) Horn.

History

Birthday: January 24th, Year 5

Born the youngest of five children given the most gothic names possible from a union of surprising love, in Duskwood, at a place called Sunshine Place, because it used to be Brightwood, and that once made sense, Melancholy came into the world with a mix of potential.

For a long time, Melancholy wasn't entirely sure what to do, until her love of books made a career path into becoming a librarian seem an obvious choice. When she experienced a traumatic event during the Shattering, she turned away from that, and made the decision to pursue becoming a warlock instead. She encountered Mr. Carlay, who insisted on a long waiting period, during which she did think about the decision. Truly.

What had begun as something of an impulse became instead a measured choice, and when she did begin her training, he was duly convinced of her reasons. Never let it be said that Melancholy isn't capable of thinking things through. Sometimes maybe thinkings things through too much, given enough time, and she had a lot of time. A young woman with no other occupation can do a lot of thinking in a year.

She told no one of her family what really happened to her, or her decision to become a warlock — and what's more, she concealed it all deliberately once she did finally begin working on it. It was as if she had made her decision, and wanted absolutely no other input at all, and that she felt like her choice wasn't anyone's business but her own, or perhaps underestimated the impact of it. Either way, when she did finally speak of the matter, it was only as a done deal.

After she finalized her pact on January 25th, Year 30th, she decided on a specialization into Affliction, and the necessity of finding a warlock instructor who could see her through the next stage of her learning. Mr. Carlay suggested Averlena Shine, and Melancholy successfully applied for an apprenticeship, which involved taking an entire trip to Pandaria and working with the Fallon Fleet, intersecting her Fate with Lieutenant Reckoning Bryn Baird, and putting her on a course that Melancholy could never have foreseen, but Destiny must have, right?

After all, with a name like Melancholy Grimlocke, doesn't she just seem like she should be a warlock?

Relationships

Bryn Baird
“It is like what we imagine knowledge to be: dark, salt, clear, moving, utterly free.” A depth of intelligence and incredible memory, he’s constructed a mind house to hold his knowledge, and applied a thoughtful soul to the contents. “The clearest eyes in all the world they read, with sense more keen and spirit of sight more true, than burns and thrills in sunrise.” His eyes are gorgeous, set in a golden face of an incredible body. “A youth to Fortune and Fame unknown. Fair science frown’d not on his humble birth, and Melancholy mark’d him for her own.” Hers, in hope; his, in truth.

Woe

Woe
“Therefore I dare reveal my private woe, the secret blots of my imperfect heart, nor strive to shrink or swell mine own desert, nor beautify nor hide. For this I know, that even as I am, thou also art.” Brother, beloved friend, twin of the soul.
Miserie
“Still, where rosy Pleasure leads, see a kindred Grief pursue; Behind the steps that Misery treads, Approaching comfort view: the hues of bliss more brightly glow.” Sister, much admired. Oldest friend of magic.
Torment
“Love is a torment of the mind, a tempest everlasting.” Brother, poet, to be protected at all times.
Theris
“Thus much is saved from chance and change, that waits for me and thee; thus much – how little! – from the range of Death and Destiny.” Chance met, dear friend. “Then shalt thou see me and know me – Death, then, no longer, but life.” Guardian of the Living in Duskwood. “I don’t want to cover his face with handkerchiefs that he may get used to the death he carries.” Death knight (never knighted). Complicated.
