- Stormwind Army - Janice joined the Stormwind Army in year 18, as soon as she came of age, and has served ever since, though mostly in a support capacity. You certainly know of her father, Major Mattingly, if you do not know her personally. He is frequently seen guarding the front gates of Stormwind.
- Journalism - For the past decade or so, Janice has been an occasional contributor of military-related articles and interest pieces to various outlets, beginning with respected local papers and eventually having a few of her articles published in major outlets.
Appearance
Janice's deep red hair is constantly in the process of growing out; once it gets long enough to annoy her she tends to crop it all off and start over. Her eyes are a warm brown, ranging from chocolate to a dark caramel depending on the light, and her skin is lightly spattered with freckles.
She favors comfortable, masculine styles of clothing, but is not opposed to dressing up if it suits the occasion and her mood. Her posture is straight and impeccable, her manner energetic and at times overly intense. "She's got a stare like a herding dog," her father, Major Mattingly, has affectionately said.
She speaks with a middle-class Stormwind accent, with the tone and jargon of a soldier most of the time, but there is something about her conversation that suggests she enjoys the act of speaking, and in an extended conversation, her exceptionally wide-ranging and nuanced vocabulary becomes apparent.
Personality
Visceral ⬥ Verbal ⬥ Disciplined ⬥ Insistent
Janice is a creature of instinct and deep emotion, tempered by a lifelong quest for discipline and control. While she is not unintelligent, her most important decisions are never based on intellect and logic. She lets her gut lead her, which turns out well more often than you'd expect. When it doesn't though… yikes.
She was speaking fluent Common before the age of two, and enjoys casually studying other languages, though she is not fluent in any others. While she can speak as elegantly, diplomatically, or roundaboutly as an occasion requires, she prefers the sort of words that grab one by the throat. Between her life growing up around the military and her somewhat coarse emotions, she can occasionally curse like a sailor when under duress or seized by passion, but she never does so casually.
Everything from her clothing and hair, her quarters, her words, her behavior, and her diet are under constant strict self-surveillance. Her standards for herself are extraordinarily high, and she has lifelong practice in ensuring that she meets them. In part, her habit of constant discipline is her way of acknowledging the tempestuous potential of her deeply emotional nature and keeping in check.
Perhaps the thing people find most annoying about her is that she seems constitutionally incapable of giving up or letting things go. Once she has set her mind on it she will have her answers, her time at the podium, her vengeance, her salad dressing on the side - whatever she's decided she wants - no matter what the circumstances.
Traits that might be considered charming or not: her impeccable neatness, her intense absorption when reading, and her habit of occasionally bursting into bewilderingly intense monologues on whatever her current subject of passion might be.
History
Janice's mother died in the First War, and so she was raised by a single father - that is to say, by various members of the Stormwind Army. She joined the army herself as soon as she was eligible. Although her father forbade her from serving on the front lines, she has always managed to be as close to deadly danger as possible.
