- Longtime/former residents of Southshore might have met Halliday as a child, or been acquainted with the Bristows. Ditto sailors and other Eastern Kingdoms mercantile interests.
- Other members/students of the Kirin Tor might know her.
- Veterans of the Battle of Mt. Hyjal might have encountered her.
- Early settlers on Theramore may remember her.
Appearance
With her long flaxen hair, almond-shaped grey eyes, and roses-and-cream complexion, Halliday possesses a painterly beauty that might be frankly obnoxious were it not for her sweetly doll-like air. Her heart-shaped face, petite stature and gently rounded figure lend her a softness that means she is often mistaken for younger than her twenty-four years.
Personality
CURIOUS * WHOLEHEARTED * DREAMY * FRANK
Belying the delicacy of her appearance, Halliday can sometimes have a frank, observational manner that reads as tactless, though her obvious innocence can soften the edges. She means well, and will always be chagrined when others take offense or are hurt by something she says, but she often seems genuinely baffled by their dismay. There's something in her interactions with people that suggests she is studying rather than engaging with them, like a wide-eyed anthropologist observing some novel culture whose customs are opaque.
Conversely, she seems largely oblivious to others' observations of her, utterly unselfconscious. She can frequently be seen whispering to herself, or gazing mesmerized into space, or fidgeting dreamily.
This character is in a committed relationship and cannot be romanced.
History
Halliday was born in Southshore, one of the five children — three boys, two girls — of sea captain Moira Wythe and her husband Callum Bristow. Halliday is precisely the middle child of the family.
Her mother was a brash, swaggering, salt-mouthed sailor, her father a quiet, serious, studious merchant. When they met, Moira owned the ship Greenlea and Callum was a shopkeeper in town. As a captain, Moira had a reputation for speed and daring; as a merchant, Callum had a reputation for honesty and fair-dealing. The pair joined forces as the Greenlea Shipping Company. Two years and some stunning business success later, they married.
Moira and Greenlea were lost at sea on a winter crossing to Kul Tiras when Halliday was fourteen years old. Callum withdrew into his work; Halliday's two older brothers were old enough to strike out in the world on their own, but even just the three remaining children proved too much for Callum. Halliday's parents had already engaged a magical tutor for her after the girl had demonstrated some interest in and talent for the arcane, and it was this woman who eventually took mercy on the grieving widower and suggested that the girl be packed off to Dalaran to continue her education. Callum, whose middle daughter had always been a peculiar and complicated child, accepted this suggestion with relief, and Halliday was dispatched to study with the Kirin Tor. The long shadow of the Scourge had just begun to creep across parts of the north.
Late in the war, Halliday was one of Jaina Proudmoore's cohort that set out for Kalimdor before Dalaran fell. Despite her young age, she fought there against the Legion in the war's last throes, and then moved with the remaining Alliance forces to aid in the establishment of Theramore.
Halliday re-encountered childhood friend Ismene Hazan in the year 26, and after spending some time with Ismene and Ismene's friend and colleague Sil Silentstep, she joined them as a member of Cobalt Company. In the autumn of 26, however, as a new plague began to sweep the Eastern Kingdoms — delivered by shipping crates to a number of ports — it became apparent that Greenlea Shipping had been made an inadvertent party to the plague dissemination, unaware of the cargo it carried. The company shuttered abruptly, and Callum Bristow was shortly thereafter found dead, apparently by his own hand. His son Emmon inherited the disaster.
In the year 27, Halliday sailed with Cobalt Company to Northrend.
