RP Hooks

  • Detective: Gabriella is a member of the army's Special Investigation Branch, which handles the detective work of law enforcement. Have you brushed with the law? Criminals, witnesses, and victims may have some history with Gabriella.
  • Fame: In her younger days, Gabriella Thorne's name was on the front page of every paper in Gilneas for cracking the Whisper case. She has had many other notches in her belt since then, becoming well known as a brilliant detective. However, in more recent years such glory is mostly heaped on her protégé, Halford Ramsey.
  • Low-born: Though she carries herself with a veneer of refinement and seems to be educated, Gabby was born to the lower class. Her father was an underpaid gardener for a noble house. Her mother used to be a teacher, but after her drinking lost her that job, she became a laundress.
  • Acrophobic: Though very little can rattle her, Gabriella is afraid of heights. She can force herself onto balconies and such, but stays well clear of the edge.

Appearance

Gabriella's face is narrow, but with a strong jawline. Stormy eyes keenly observe her surroundings, examining every tiny detail. Her typically stern expression occasionally betrays hints of subtle warmth. Her hair is cut short and neat, and while age gracefully turned it silver-gray, the worgen curse seems to have restored it to its youthful golden blonde.

Gabriella's attire mirrors her professionalism—crisp, tailored, and practical yet sophisticated. Her choice of classic styles reflects her penchant for respect-commanding outfits that allow her freedom of movement in the unpredictable landscape of her profession.

Personality

Insightful ⬥ Logical ⬥ Dogged ⬥ Humane

Gabriella presents herself with a stern demeanor, exuding an air of authority and command. Her mannerisms are often polished and direct, a testament to her years in law enforcement, where professionalism is a cornerstone. Behind this lies an introspective and observant mind, constantly analyzing situations and reflecting on her actions.

Gabriella's keen perception keeps her ever alert, allowing her to decipher intricate details that others might overlook. Her logical approach to problem-solving leads her to confront situations head-on, often appearing forceful and impatient when she encounters inefficiency or injustice.

While she can be confrontational and even rude when faced with incompetence or moral ambiguity, underneath her cold exterior lies a deep well of compassion. Her desire for justice stems from a genuine concern for the vulnerable, a driving force that propels her to right the wrongs she encounters, even if it means bending the rules.

Her sense of justice is unwavering, though her methods might sometimes appear unorthodox or abrasive. Gabriella's confrontational nature sometimes veils a layer of sarcasm, a shield she employs to navigate the complexities of her emotions and experiences.

Gabriella's outlook on justice and morality caused her to long ago come to the conclusion that thinking about politics is a waste of valuable time. She generally distrusts politicians unless they prove themselves trustworthy. She finds the constant bickering tiresome and better left to keeping lesser minds occupied.

Romance

History

The cobbled streets of Gilneas City were full of secrets and hidden dangers. Burt Thorne was usually a careful man, staying in the glow of the streetlamps whenever he walked at night. He treated everything in his life with the same concern and caution he paid to the gardens he tended for his lord. But it was his daughter's fifth birthday and he was running late; he hated disappointing his little Gabriella. A shortcut through one of the city's narrow alleys would get him home on time. But Burt Thorne never emerged from the other side of that alley.

Growing Up Too Fast

Burt's absence left a fathomless void in Gabriella. She withdrew after his death, submerged in the depths of emotions too big for such a small child. Her mother, Euphemia, changed as well, medicating her grief with the bottle. Euphemia felt ever more alone as her child became more distant. Over the years, her drinking exacerbated her frustration, which she physically took out on Gabriella.

Raised in the turbulent embrace of a mother who oscillated between remorseful tenderness and drunken abuse, young Gabriella learned to navigate the shadows that lurked in her own home. Her scars were not merely from the physical torment but from the psychological battle of understanding the erratic behavior of the one who was meant to offer comfort.

Gabby spent as much time away from home as possible. Her favorite refuge was a bookshop. The owner knew her situation and he took pity on her, allowing her to sit quietly and read for as long as she liked. No matter how many fanciful fairy tales he suggested to her, she always gravitated toward non-fiction. Histories, philosophy, and even science books were her choices. In a life full of chaos, Gabriella found sanctuary in the consistency of books and learning—especially when she discovered logic and reason.

However, even in the safe, orderly world of logic, Gabby found herself perplexed by the fates of her parents. She could find no rationality behind her father's yet-unsolved murder, nor in her mother's self-destructive behavior. However, she saw a path that might help her understand people better. At the age of 18, Gabby joined the army.

A Path to Reason

It wasn't that Gabriella wanted to fight; her sights were set on the Special Investigation Branch. With their training and resources, perhaps she could find out what happened to her father, and make sense of her mother's demons. If nothing else, the rigid structure of the military gave her a sense of predictability and control.

Her ascent through the ranks was as relentless as her pursuit of truth and order. She spent several years in the scouting division, learning valuable tracking and survival skills. Her ability to dissect intricate details, coupled with an unwavering commitment to the pursuit of justice, saw her climb the ladder to become a Special Investigator. Her keen mind and unwavering focus became legendary among her peers, earning her both respect and apprehension.

Gabriella broke her most famous case six years after joining the SIB. "The Whisper" had become the most notorious thief in Gilneas, making off with priceless treasures from nobles' estates seemingly without leaving a trace. The law had pursued the mystery burglar for years with no success. It was Gabriella who saw the patterns that led her to the doorstep of Lord Howlett. But she did not accuse Howlett himself of being the Whisper. She had discovered that his son, Andrel, had cultivated a network of disgruntled servants who were smuggling the goods out. The name Gabriella Thorne was suddenly in every periodical in Gilneas; her career was made.

Gabriella's tenure in law enforcement was not without moral compromises. She understood the grey areas within the system, the places where justice and necessity clashed, and sometimes blurred. Her actions were not always pristine, often veiled by a perceived greater good. These choices weighed on her, leaving a subtle but perceptible mark on her conscience.

Despite her logical exterior, emotional scars lingered beneath the surface. The memory of her mother's remorseful yet volatile behavior forged an unyielding drive within her—a compulsion to mend the broken world around her, to right the wrongs she witnessed, even if it meant occasionally stepping beyond the law.

With decades in service to the crown, Gabriella Thorne became a well-known name among Gilneans. She never sought the limelight and was uncomfortable with accolades. When her protégé, Special Investigator Halford Ramsey, began to outshine her in the public's eye, that suited her just fine. She only wished to understand people and prevent others from suffering the same hardships she had. She believed every puzzle could be solved, and the woes of society were no different.

Relationships

Euphemia Thorne
Mother stopped trying decades ago. It's a miracle she's still alive, which might be only due to the stipend I send her…though she mostly spends it on drink. Thank the Light compassionate and patient Mr. Cooper next door making sure she's always fed. It's fairly obvious he's always been in love with her. Poor man.
Ezekeal Borden
The only stable thing in Ezekeal's life seemed to be the leader of his gang, Adam. When Adam got pinched he was sentenced to naval service. Without the older boy's guidance, Zeke would have ended up just another street kid, either dead in an alley or under the heel of some crime boss. It wasn't hard to call in a favor from a friend in the navy to get Zeke a cabin boy position on Adam's ship.
Halford Ramsey
I met Ramsey as a promising young investigator, new to the SIB. He alone had the sharpness of mind and grasp of logic to be truly great. I poured everything I had into him, and he showed me he could become even greater.
Apricity Hearthleigh
Trouble. Typical spoiled noble brat. He's turned up at too many crime scenes, always involved but somehow never the perpetrator.

Liyen Thorne

Liyen Thorne
First cousin, once removed. The daughter of my cousin who lived beyond the Wall. I've met her a handful of times in my life. That side of the family never approved of my father moving to the city, nor of what became of my mother.
Merelda Veyne
Oslynn Boles's guardian. I wasn't sure about her at first, but it's become clear to me she has Oslynn's best interests at heart. We talk regularly, mostly about the girl, but I suppose in some unexpected way we've become friends.
Oslynn Boles
This young woman has a history of skirting the law, but she's no criminal. She's lived a life of hard knocks and just needs someone keep her focused on a healthier path. Fortunately, she has Lady Merelda Veyne in her life to do just that.
Lukas Rhenardt
After the Second War, Lukas discovered evidence of a conspiracy to sell army weapons and equipment on the black market. He reported it to the SIB himself, and I took the case. Working the case beside me did him no favors among his peers, who viewed him as a "rat" despite being 100% correct. He resigned after the case, and while I regret my part in ending his career, I found in him a man of immeasurable integrity and loyalty. No one is more reliable, be that as a partner, an ally, or someone to share a drink with.

Pets

Cheddar Cheddar
Cheddar has been Gabriella's loyal companion for nearly 10 years. Like her, Cheddar is aging, but he still has a keen nose and a spring in his step.
