- House Esprit-Fallon: Finley is the forward social moving piece of House Esprit and House Fallon. He will be in places that Avrenne or Siamus cannot be, or will be, but moving through the crowd in different ways. He’s been raised up high enough to be considered a gentleman, if not a member of the nobility itself.
- Milady Moth: He has been featured in the gossip column as a young man associated with House Fallon, with an implication that there might be something salacious about his presence given Siamus’ flirtatious reputation
- Azeroth Art Scene: Known for his oil landscapes of bold colors, he's been making something of a name for himself. He circulates frequently among the parties most of all, more than anything, and has enough technical knowledge to make scintillating conversation that suggests he's little more than a gentleman painter these days.
Appearance
Finley is a young man in his mid-20s with dark hair and murky eyes of a mix of green and brown, and a gangly height of 6'3". His face is on the longer side, with a prominent nose that has been broken and not healed correctly, and a cleft chin. He's a guarded man, who resents most of his emotions, and will retreat behind a butler's bland non-expression when he wants to, but has learned how to maintain a pleasant smile through most circumstances. His shoulders had a natural tendency to hunch, either in a casual slouch or a resentful bristle, but these days he keeps to a gentleman's posture. Some might think it’s simply character growth.
A gentleman painter
As an up and coming artist and society socialite, he dresses well to fit his lean, slim build, and usually in House Esprit colors: dark browns, maroons, pops of dark gold. At parties, he’s known to wear deep brown eyeliner to accentuate his eyes, and while he never leads a social event in any style, he always seems to manage to fit somewhere in the nondescript middle.
Others looking even closer will note that he walks softly, silently, and has muscles building in places you wouldn't expect an artist to have. Maybe he works out a little as a hobby?
He is not a member of the nobility, but he is a gentleman of his guardian’s House, and he has the appearance of one.
His usual accent sounds mostly like a Stormwind man with a touch of Lordaeron in the vowels, but when he drops more of the mask through purpose or with heavier drinking, his truer lower-class Lordaeron accent makes its way out from the depths of his childhood.
Personality
Wily • Truehearted • Guarded • Gloomy
ALIGNMENT: CHAOTIC NEUTRAL
For most of his adult life as a butler for House Esprit in Stormwind, Finley spent his time being flirtatious with people, with little real intent (not that he wasn’t unwilling to follow through when the flirtee proved interested in intent), the point of which was often unclear to outsiders.
Nowadays, the flirtations are those of a gentleman, and with even less intent — and polite demurring refusals to follow through, much as he makes clear it lightly pains him to do so. In fact, he seems especially unattached; he is courting no one, and no one is courting him. His reputation has begun to precede him of being a perpetually single bachelor who no one is capable of catching, a dangling marital option of House Esprit Fallon who is now potentially something of a personal challenge as much as a possible social prize.
As a Butler, he was able to achieve a blandness to the point of non-personality. As a Gentleman, he's softened his natural sharpness, and let his natural people skills be honed into something that makes even the most calculated of approaches feel completely natural. He often seems even keeled and easy going.
He is not. Deep down, under the veneer of the persona he has carefully constructed over the years, burns the inner fire of a man with a hot temper and old anger. Prone to a darker outlook and an inability to find the bright side of things, Finley’s propensity for the shadows also makes him good at finding those in them. He uses his ability to think like a liar and manipulator to turn the tables on them, following the principles of his guiding compass – Avrenne Esprit Fallon.
He's come a long way from the days when people could feel when he was watching them too closely.
But although he's made significant strides in reading people and concealing himself, he lacks his guardian Avrenne's persuasiveness or ability to create strategic plans. He goes by his gut feeling and this is not always wise. While he shares her non-invasive subtlety, he seems far more willing to do things in a more underhanded way. It’s rare for him to approach a problem directly if there’s a way to go about it sideways.
He's a man who is slow to loyalty, and narrowly given to only a chosen precious few, but once there, it can become unshakable to the point of an ultimate sacrifice.
THIS CHARACTER IS CURRENTLY IN A ROMANCE
Finley is a subtle, slow burn romance. Finley has agreed to be the forward-facing socialite of House Esprit-Fallon, and he will act accordingly — that is, he will play at being social bait, and flirt far and wide, without marrying. At present, that has no end date. He will play his part faithfully, but that doesn't mean that he cannot have feelings (ugh, feelings) for someone or multiple someones, that are true.
He is pansexual, generally attracted to women only for romance, but this is not a firm line. He is attracted to humans, and some quel'dorei, sin'dorei, kaldorei, and draenei, but he has not had a serious relationship with anyone of any race. One of the main factors is age, in that he doesn't go for people more than eight years younger than him, and struggles with the idea of people who are more than twice his age (it's not a no, just an odder place to start for him).
Finley is primarily attracted to bright, honest, creative, lively, impulsive, emotional, dangerous, and sweet people. He is not usually attracted to people who are constantly pessimistic, dishonest, cautious, stoic, cold, or overly self-righteous. He's especially weak to volatile, powerful forthright and honest women with aggressively sunshine personalities.
Although he can develop feelings early on, to have him actually admit to them is another matter altogether; convincing him to truly embrace his feelings as romantic is a slow burn process. In his current circumstances, it will take even more time to convince him that it can work, with patience and desire for him as a person who might not be able to live his romantic life openly. Discretion, however, does not bother him, and is a requirement for his romance.
He is not a strictly monogamous person, but he has very strong feelings about the potential for children out of wedlock, and this will influence his approach to any and all sexual relationships with people capable of conceiving from it. He has not ever had any serious relationship before, in large part because his devotion to Avrenne has always come first, and it always will. Romantic relationships will have their own devotion, but his commitment to his House will always be a factor.
He can be seriously romanced by someone who can withstand the delicate dance of a man playing a part in a social dance as a liar and spy.
As a partner, Finley is much softer than the man he often presents to be, although he can be moody and prone to brooding, and he has his own temper. It is often a sign of true closeness when he is genuinely expressing those feelings, and not hiding behind his social mask of Pleasant Gentleman.
He often shows his affection with surprises, well-planned clever gifts and thoughtful experiences (frequently, these were all carefully curated and organized ahead of time, and based on something they expressed interest in at some point). His insight into a partner, or partners, makes him particularly well suited to those who don't communicate well, and he is a man who is not afraid of apologizing first, or chasing after someone who needs to be followed. He is capable of deep fidelity that will lower his perpetual guard enough to show the true heart beneath. He won't share secrets about himself easily, but he will guard a love's secrets with his very life.
History
BIRTHDAY: AUGUST 28TH, YEAR 3
The Boutilles were a family that served House Esprit as butlers for four generations. Finley grew up somewhat alongside Avrenne for his early childhood, in the sense that his father and he were at the Great House (the Esprit family's ancestral estate, also known as the Soleine House). Six years younger than her, and deeply resentful of the youngest Esprit daughter, Finley was a moody child on the fringes of Avrenne's awareness. When Finley's grandfather died, Finley and his father moved to the City to attend the Duke Esprit. After Avrenne came to the City of Lordaeron, Finley watched as she at turns defied and obeyed the Duke, and the young man held a bitter resentment for her.
Then, a year before the Fall, it was found out that Finley was not the son of Mr. Thomas Boutille, but actually the son of an explorer Gaius Muire. Mr. Boutille demanded Finley be cast off, but the Duke Esprit intervened (it is not their way, after all, to abandon those of the House), allowing for a compromise to strip Finley of his family name, give him another, and place him elsewhere among the family to be of use.
During the attack of the City by Arthas' Scourge, Finley was left on his own to hide, and found by Avrenne, who helped see the young man to safety, even knowing full well that he had hated her for a long time. The experience changed Finley, and his relationship to Avrenne; when she came into power as the Duchess Esprit, she offered Finley to be part of the House Esprit or her ward. He took the wardship, and she used it to overturn her father's decision, restoring Finley's name and giving him the position he had been meant to take.
However, after Avrenne’s marriage to Siamus Fallon and the merging of their households, there was already another butler, competent and well-established. They didn’t need another one. But, that didn’t mean a place couldn’t be found for the young, unfailingly loyal man with good instincts and a sharp enough mind for intrigue just as Sintha Fallon sought an exit from her longtime position as a socialite spy for SI:7.
Finley’s training took over a year, but by the time he was done, he had constructed an entire persona, learned how to dispatch any enemy of the House as needed, and established his ability to work for the benefit of the House and the Kingdom of Stormwind. His cover identity as a painter has never been discovered by any outside source, and he has worked hard to seem a legitimate artist.
Relationships
Avrenne
The person by which Finley sets the compass of his true heart. Finley’s love for Avrenne is intense, but not romantic, and the devotion he has for her cannot be broken. He has seen in her a power and strength, a love and loyalty, that he will hold onto for all his life. Everything he does, he does for her benefit. It’s his greatest wish to be of use to her, and to be needed by her. |
Isla
Finley's younger sister in all but blood and name. The sunshine to his gloom, and the unguarded free spirit to his guarded one, they are oil and water, but Finley will guard the young girl with his very life – and he has. He’s died for her once, and he would do so again. |
Admiral Fallon
The only man whose devotion to Avrenne rivals Finley’s own, and for that, Fallon holds the other tether of Finley’s greatest loyalty. Fallon is the one who Finley goes to with his gut instincts, and he is forever grateful to Fallon for giving him purpose for the House. |
Lady Sintha
For years before, Finley knew Sintha as the vapid socialite. He learned better. The one whose role Finley filled when she changed jobs to the 7th Legion, he has learned a lot better. Now he has a healthy fear and respect for the woman. |
Ralaea
Second Lieutenant. One of the latest additions to the wards of House Fallon, they two are closer in age than the others. They’ve gained a rapport, code names, and secret signals for mischief. |
Otto
Older than Isla, but younger than Finley, in many ways Finley sees the young man as the youngest of them all. Finley is protective of the soft young man, and has a patience for Otto’s needs regarding contact and questions answered. |
Shine
One of those who genuinely like Avrenne, and Finley likes the man that much more for it. The former first footman and butler is discreet, and Finley enjoys a relationship of mutual observation and not talking about feelings with the man. Ideal. |
Miss Curran
Fallon’s terrifying secretary, clerk, notary, and bodyguard. Something called a Thornspeaker, like a druid. Dangerous, and absolutely loyal to Fallon. They are therefore on the same team. |
Miss Lynds
The attached retainer to House Fallon, she is pregnant and unmarried. Socially difficult with the learned habits of a guard, and the status of a Lady and head of her House. Currently at a Finishing School. |
Hana
Sweetheart. What began through Elle due to a delayed response to an unusual letter written on the man’s behalf turned into much more. A broom, a leaf, a song later, and Finley had lost his heart to the Arched Harp: harpist, hunter, and barmaid extraordinaire. But with Finley unable to tell her the truth of who he was and why he could not truly pursue her, he attempted to end the blossoming feelings he perceived her to have. Unfortunately, he underestimated the strength of those feelings, and now he has no idea what to do next. |
Elle
Initially intended as a potential third for Ralaea and Morningdew, Finley established a genuine rapport with Elle, and the two hit off an actual friendship. Difficult as it is for Finley to maintain something genuine while socializing, Elle is the closest friend Finley has had outside of the house in almost a decade. Elle can’t know the truth about Finley, but he can know a truth about Finley, and that’s as good as it gets for the social spy. |
Scilla
An old friend of Avrenne's, who Finley likes well. There's always been a level of envy for the woman's artistic talent and ability, but he's never let it show, unwilling to cross the line of the sort of servant he was meant to be. She's done a portrait of him once (1x), and that was all he could handle both of being perceived and having a reminder of what he wasn't allowing himself to do. |
Lady Dara
One of the noble ladies that Finley flirted with as part of his efforts to uncover any potential threats to Avrenne, he formed a genuine attachment to the young woman, only to find himself fully and truly rebuffed because he was a Servant and it had only been the skilled flirtation out of view of Society. When she began seeing her former-fiance, she made it clear that even with his elevation to gentleman status, she had no feelings for him. Now, she is nothing more than another moving piece through the political wheel to him. |
Morningdew
Ralaea's fiancé, and death knight who used to be friendly with Avrenne. He still seems to like Avrenne, which puts him in Finley's good books. Seems to have two personalities, one of which is 'Mourn,' and sort of unhinged. Can be handled by throwing a jacket over his head, for unclear reasons. Finley can see why Ralaea still thinks of the undead man as a person. |
Lady Cressidha
An association of Avrenne's, one of the nobles part of Cobalt Company, and the daughter of one of the most influential Stormwind families. Important to watch, particularly because she's still unmarried, and who she does marry will influence how much more power Aspenwood has. Currently courting Silvestre Silentstep, which is interesting. |
Lord Colson
A politically significant player as an Aspenwood, but Finley has absolutely no idea what he would talk to the man about. They appear to have nothing in common. |
Lord Mordecai
Lord Colson’s husband. Shy, formed an instant friendship with Elle, and has connections to several other key minor political players. |
Lord Graves
One of Fallon’s lovers, and now one of Avrenne’s, and one of Isla’s heroes of her stories because he once caught her before she fell (an action that Finley has done innumerable times himself, he would like everyone to know). There’s something a little standoffish about the man, but Finley will keep an eye on him. |
Lady Merelda
A worgen architect, designing the townhouse in Stormwind City for House Fallon. Motherly type. Finley would put money that she prefers ladies exclusively. |
Lady Alaisa
A friend of Sintha's. There is something about how the woman moves that Finley can't quite put his finger on, but it feels strangely familiar. Definitely a lady for ladies. Wait, is she a lady for ladies about Sintha — ?? |
Count Amerith
An ally of Avrenne’s, and of the House, the eccentric nobleman can be counted on to react in certain ways. Although he likes to maintain an air of mystery, Finley has a feeling that most of the time Amerith isn’t actually as nefarious or far-seeing as people think he is. Doesn’t make the man less dangerous. There’s an emptiness behind his eyes too often. Knew Hana’s mother, and has an interest in Hana, which means he has Finley’s attention. |
Sergeant Tyrrell
The man who courted Avrenne before her marriage to Fallon. Finley is aware that Avrenne took him as a lover for a time, and that Fallon still does. He remains unconvinced whether Tyrrell ever really liked Avrenne, and so Finley does not like the man. |
Miss Sunstrike
The latest potential political scandal waiting to happen. One of Fallon’s lovers. Doesn’t appear to like Avrenne, and therefore Finley does not like Aszera, regarding her with high suspicion. He views her as too pliant, and too impulsive, especially as someone with power to implode the House. He has positioned himself as a Pleasant Gentleman around her to spy on her when she thinks she isn’t being actively tested. |
Thaniel Clay
Isla’s worgen friend. Soft young man who gave her a book of fairy tales, one of which bothered Isla to read. Finley is reserving judgement, but someday he’ll make sure that the chosen story was just an accident and not a deliberate attempt at wrecking Isla’s day. |
Natalyah Kensington-Whit
Isla’s trainer for the Light. A worgen woman once part of the nobility who still acts like she is, with a mercurial moodswinging personality to rival Isla. Finley stays out of their business as often as possible. |
Ilanya Ravendusk
One of Counter Amerith’s people. She knows a truth about his temper and something of his realer feelings for Hana. He knows she would have killed for Reniya. It’s as close to balanced as they’re going to get for now. Cute, in a deadly way. |
