RP Hooks

  • House Esprit-Fallon: Finley is the forward social moving piece of House Esprit and House Fallon. He will be in places that Avrenne or Siamus cannot be, or will be, but moving through the crowd in different ways. He’s been raised up high enough to be considered a gentleman, if not a member of the nobility itself.
  • Milady Moth: He has been featured in the gossip column as a young man associated with House Fallon, with an implication that there might be something salacious about his presence given Siamus’ flirtatious reputation
  • Azeroth Art Scene: Known for his oil landscapes of bold colors, he's been making something of a name for himself. He circulates frequently among the parties most of all, more than anything, and has enough technical knowledge to make scintillating conversation that suggests he's little more than a gentleman painter these days.

Appearance

Finley is a young man in his mid-20s with dark hair and murky eyes of a mix of green and brown, and a gangly height of 6'3". His face is on the longer side, with a prominent nose that has been broken and not healed correctly, and a cleft chin. He's a guarded man, who resents most of his emotions, and will retreat behind a butler's bland non-expression when he wants to, but has learned how to maintain a pleasant smile through most circumstances. His shoulders had a natural tendency to hunch, either in a casual slouch or a resentful bristle, but these days he keeps to a gentleman's posture. Some might think it’s simply character growth.

Finley_dance
A gentleman painter

As an up and coming artist and society socialite, he dresses well to fit his lean, slim build, and usually in House Esprit colors: dark browns, maroons, pops of dark gold. At parties, he’s known to wear deep brown eyeliner to accentuate his eyes, and while he never leads a social event in any style, he always seems to manage to fit somewhere in the nondescript middle.

Others looking even closer will note that he walks softly, silently, and has muscles building in places you wouldn't expect an artist to have. Maybe he works out a little as a hobby?

He is not a member of the nobility, but he is a gentleman of his guardian’s House, and he has the appearance of one.

His usual accent sounds mostly like a Stormwind man with a touch of Lordaeron in the vowels, but when he drops more of the mask through purpose or with heavier drinking, his truer lower-class Lordaeron accent makes its way out from the depths of his childhood.

Personality

Wily • Truehearted • Guarded • Gloomy

ALIGNMENT: CHAOTIC NEUTRAL

For most of his adult life as a butler for House Esprit in Stormwind, Finley spent his time being flirtatious with people, with little real intent (not that he wasn’t unwilling to follow through when the flirtee proved interested in intent), the point of which was often unclear to outsiders.

Nowadays, the flirtations are those of a gentleman, and with even less intent — and polite demurring refusals to follow through, much as he makes clear it lightly pains him to do so. In fact, he seems especially unattached; he is courting no one, and no one is courting him. His reputation has begun to precede him of being a perpetually single bachelor who no one is capable of catching, a dangling marital option of House Esprit Fallon who is now potentially something of a personal challenge as much as a possible social prize.

As a Butler, he was able to achieve a blandness to the point of non-personality. As a Gentleman, he's softened his natural sharpness, and let his natural people skills be honed into something that makes even the most calculated of approaches feel completely natural. He often seems even keeled and easy going.

He is not. Deep down, under the veneer of the persona he has carefully constructed over the years, burns the inner fire of a man with a hot temper and old anger. Prone to a darker outlook and an inability to find the bright side of things, Finley’s propensity for the shadows also makes him good at finding those in them. He uses his ability to think like a liar and manipulator to turn the tables on them, following the principles of his guiding compass – Avrenne Esprit Fallon.

He's come a long way from the days when people could feel when he was watching them too closely.

But although he's made significant strides in reading people and concealing himself, he lacks his guardian Avrenne's persuasiveness or ability to create strategic plans. He goes by his gut feeling and this is not always wise. While he shares her non-invasive subtlety, he seems far more willing to do things in a more underhanded way. It’s rare for him to approach a problem directly if there’s a way to go about it sideways.

He's a man who is slow to loyalty, and narrowly given to only a chosen precious few, but once there, it can become unshakable to the point of an ultimate sacrifice.

History

BIRTHDAY: AUGUST 28TH, YEAR 3

The Boutilles were a family that served House Esprit as butlers for four generations. Finley grew up somewhat alongside Avrenne for his early childhood, in the sense that his father and he were at the Great House (the Esprit family's ancestral estate, also known as the Soleine House). Six years younger than her, and deeply resentful of the youngest Esprit daughter, Finley was a moody child on the fringes of Avrenne's awareness. When Finley's grandfather died, Finley and his father moved to the City to attend the Duke Esprit. After Avrenne came to the City of Lordaeron, Finley watched as she at turns defied and obeyed the Duke, and the young man held a bitter resentment for her.

Then, a year before the Fall, it was found out that Finley was not the son of Mr. Thomas Boutille, but actually the son of an explorer Gaius Muire. Mr. Boutille demanded Finley be cast off, but the Duke Esprit intervened (it is not their way, after all, to abandon those of the House), allowing for a compromise to strip Finley of his family name, give him another, and place him elsewhere among the family to be of use.

During the attack of the City by Arthas' Scourge, Finley was left on his own to hide, and found by Avrenne, who helped see the young man to safety, even knowing full well that he had hated her for a long time. The experience changed Finley, and his relationship to Avrenne; when she came into power as the Duchess Esprit, she offered Finley to be part of the House Esprit or her ward. He took the wardship, and she used it to overturn her father's decision, restoring Finley's name and giving him the position he had been meant to take.

However, after Avrenne’s marriage to Siamus Fallon and the merging of their households, there was already another butler, competent and well-established. They didn’t need another one. But, that didn’t mean a place couldn’t be found for the young, unfailingly loyal man with good instincts and a sharp enough mind for intrigue just as Sintha Fallon sought an exit from her longtime position as a socialite spy for SI:7.

Finley’s training took over a year, but by the time he was done, he had constructed an entire persona, learned how to dispatch any enemy of the House as needed, and established his ability to work for the benefit of the House and the Kingdom of Stormwind. His cover identity as a painter has never been discovered by any outside source, and he has worked hard to seem a legitimate artist.

Relationships

Avrenne
The person by which Finley sets the compass of his true heart. Finley’s love for Avrenne is intense, but not romantic, and the devotion he has for her cannot be broken. He has seen in her a power and strength, a love and loyalty, that he will hold onto for all his life. Everything he does, he does for her benefit. It’s his greatest wish to be of use to her, and to be needed by her.
Isla
Finley's younger sister in all but blood and name. The sunshine to his gloom, and the unguarded free spirit to his guarded one, they are oil and water, but Finley will guard the young girl with his very life – and he has. He’s died for her once, and he would do so again.
Admiral Fallon
The only man whose devotion to Avrenne rivals Finley’s own, and for that, Fallon holds the other tether of Finley’s greatest loyalty. Fallon is the one who Finley goes to with his gut instincts, and he is forever grateful to Fallon for giving him purpose for the House.
Lady Sintha
For years before, Finley knew Sintha as the vapid socialite. He learned better. The one whose role Finley filled when she changed jobs to the 7th Legion, he has learned a lot better. Now he has a healthy fear and respect for the woman.
Ralaea
Second Lieutenant. One of the latest additions to the wards of House Fallon, they two are closer in age than the others. They’ve gained a rapport, code names, and secret signals for mischief.
Otto
Older than Isla, but younger than Finley, in many ways Finley sees the young man as the youngest of them all. Finley is protective of the soft young man, and has a patience for Otto’s needs regarding contact and questions answered.
