Fellow veterans of the Second or Third Wars might be acquainted with him. Wildhammer Dwarves might know him. Anyone with connections to the Church may have met him.
Appearance
A man in late middle age, his light brown hair fading to gray at the temples and his beard salted with white. He is of unimposing height but burly, broad-shouldered and barrel-chested, and he has the battered profile of a prizefighter. His craggy face is seamed with scars; one jagged slash across his left cheek bisects the corner of his mouth, leaving his upper lip pulled tight in a permanent sneer. It is belied by his actual expression, which is generally grave and watchful, and by his calm, mild demeanor.
His arms and chest are covered in faded black and dark blue ink, a motley of old sailor's and soldier's tattoos. Across his knuckles is roughly marked the sailor's traditional exhortation HOLD FAST.
He dresses in faded, coarse-spun priestly robes and carries a sturdy, gnarled quarterstaff.
Personality
He is outwardly gruff and watchful, his manner weary and salted with cynicism. He is nevertheless devoted to the Light, and beneath his crust is a paternal and protective tenderness for the world and its creatures.
His actual loyalties are few and hard-won, and he is steadfast in them. He has a strong moral sense, but his conscience (and what he believes to be the principles of the Light) dictates his actions, rather than any law or authority. He has little interest in the temporal authority of kings and commanders, unless he feels his respect or allegiance has been earned.
History
Born in Kul Tiras, a native son of the sea, Casker John became a sailor as soon as he was old enough to climb the rigging, earning his way from cabin boy and crow's nest lookout to Chief Mate on a merchant vessel by the age of twenty-two. He left the merchant fleet to enlist in the Marines, and served eventually as a Captain under Admiral Proudmoore. He took part in the devastating attack on the orcish fleet at Zul'Dare, narrowly escaping the Horde's retaliatory red dragon attack, and fought in the Battle of Hillsbrad Foothills.
At the war's end, when the Kul Tiran ships intercepted the fleet of the Black Tooth Grin clan off the island of Crestfall, the orcs again called on their red dragon slaves. Though the fiery aerial defense proved less effective this time — the Kul Tiran ships now had the support of Wildhammer gryphon riders — Casker John's was one of the ships caught in a maelstrom of flame and sunk. In desperation, feeling the cold pull of the Tidemother, he prayed to Lordaeron's Holy Light for the salvation of his crew. When nearly all of them were rescued alive by Wildhammer gryphons, he dedicated himself to the new faith, and quit the sea for the Eastern Kingdoms and the Church of the Light.
Not the type of man for a life of quiet meditation and prayer, he threw himself into his adopted religion as a military chaplain and battle cleric. He was recruited into the Black Company during the peacetime years that preceded the Third War, and has served with that group until he was hired by Lady Sintha Fallon, daughter of the late Admiral Simon Fallon, as a spiritual advisor to House Fallon. He is aware the Fallons are not actually Light-worshippers, but has earnest hopes of converting them. Good luck, buddy.
Relationships
|
|
Vice Admiral Siamus Fallon
His current employer: the Kul Tiran-born lord, son of Admiral Simon Fallon, for whose household he is currently engaged as spiritual advisor. He respects the Vice Admiral as he did the man's father (and remembers him as a child) and understands him based on their shared background, but does not do much spiritual advising for him, as it happens. He tries. |
|
|
Lady Sintha Fallon
Sister to the Commodore, daughter of Admiral Fallon, also Kul Tiran-born; the one who actually hired him for House Fallon. Clearly playing several cynical little political games. |
|
|
Eilanthe Stormlight
A fellow veteran of the Battle of Mount Hyjal. As a Sentinel, Eilanthe saved his life there, intervening when a felguard would certainly have beheaded him. She sustained a near-fatal injury in the process of killing the demon, and Casker in turn saved her life. They've been fast friends since. |
