- Members of Westfall's PEOPLE'S MILITIA four to six years ago might be acquainted with Ben, who first offered his services to the militia as a blacksmith and then later enlisted as a militiaman himself.
- Anyone who frequented the PIG & WHISTLE TAVERN in Stormwind two years ago might have encountered Ben; anyone who's been a regular at BRUUK'S CORNER in Ironforge during the last two years might have met him.
- Members or associates of the ARGENT DAWN (or Argent Crusade) who served in the Plaguelands in the last year or two, or anyone who was at the Battle of Light's Hope Chapel, might know him.
Appearance
Ben stands 6'4", with the broad-shouldered physique of a fighter… or a blacksmith. (He is both.) He is brown-skinned and black-haired, and generally has a scruffy, unshaven look. His thick hair is wavy and habitually tousled. His eyes are a warm brown. He smiles readily, revealing a chipped front tooth, and has the perennial squint of someone accustomed to long hours in the sun.

Personality
RESILIENT • PROTECTIVE • SHREWD • AMBITIOUS
At First Glance: Ben is good-natured and makes obvious effort to be mannerly, though still rough around the edges. His temper is quick and he's accustomed to negotiating disputes with his fists, but he also forgives readily and owns up willingly to his own mistakes. (He's particularly touchy about issues related to class or education.) He's an extremely hard worker, curious and open-minded, and absolutely and entirely devoted to people he loves.
Theme Song: "Get Better," by Frank Turner
The new Ference family: Ben and his adoptive parents, Elohad and Niris Ference.
Digging Deeper: Ben grew up in a deeply abusive environment. He is tough and he's resilient, but there's an element in his hardworking nature and drive for self-improvement to, as it were, "grind faction" with people. He does not really trust in the permanence of others' affection or respect, and will put in substantial effort to continue "earning" it.
Ben is not precisely dishonest, but a lot of the self-defense measures he's made habit over the years involve an affected guilelessness, a wide-eyed "aw, shucks" manner, and a certain calculated knack for omitting information.
He is also, thanks to his abusive childhood, extremely sensitive to body language. He is warier and less ready to trust men in general, and nothing will raise his hackles faster or higher than an angry man. He is both more comfortable around women and reflexively protective of them.
This character is unavailable for romance.
History
Ben, the only son of farmer Byron Hazan and his wife Eliza, grew up on their southwestern Westfall farm with his parents and paternal uncles. It was not a happy household. Ben did not have a wholesome childhood. He attended school in Moonbrook for only two years before his father pulled him out, and spent most of his time in farm work (both at home and as a local hired hand), and as a blacksmith's apprentice to his Uncle Tony. (His Uncle Isak went north before Ben was born and vanished; his Uncle Will joined the Defias, contributing to Ben's vicious grudge against that faction.)
Ben's mother killed his father when Ben was 17. Because it was adjudicated self-defense, she inherited the farm. A year or so later, her brother-in-law, Ben's Uncle Tony, burned the farm to its foundation stones in revenge.

Tony himself disappeared the following night. Ben couldn't say what became of him. Because of incriminating.
Ben and his mother moved into Moonbrook, and Ben enlisted in the Westfall Militia. His mother was very ill by this point with an ailment that had gone too long undiagnosed and untreated, and Ben spent the final months of her life caring for her. Not long after her death, Cobalt Company came to Westfall and put an end to Edwin Van Cleef; with his mother gone and the Defias stymied, Ben decided it was time to leave Westfall and track down the aunt he'd never met, his last remaining kin.
That aunt, Niris Hazan, wanted nothing to do with anyone wearing the name of the family she'd fled, and rebuffed Ben's efforts to reach out. Ben, determined, got in touch with Elohad Ference instead, and Elo — his heart gone out to the young man, and wanting to help his old friend Niris find some healing — intervened to introduce the pair and bring Ben into Cobalt Company.
Following his initial meeting with Lord Ference, at Elohad's invitation the then-homeless Ben moved into Cobalt Company HQ, where he met fellow new recruit Ismene Callis. The gentle, well-brought-up young lady with her mysterious upper-class Manners and elaborate ideas about Propriety first baffled and then fascinated and then enchanted him; six months later, they eloped.
Initially a rough-edged and angry young warrior when he first joined Cobalt, under the combined influences of his adoptive parents, his paladin friend Colson Aspenwood, and his priestess wife, Ben — who'd had no religious upbringing to speak of — turned to the Church of the Holy Light, and set out on the paladin's path himself.
Relationships
Niris Ference
Ben's biological aunt, and now (adoptive) mother. It's not Westfall Strange. |
Lord Elohad Ference
When Ben came north to find his Aunt Niris, Lord Ference took Ben under his wing and helped to reunite the pair. Now married to Aunt Nir, Uncle Elo/Sir Elo/Sir is Ben's dad and adoptive father. (Those overlap but aren't the same.) |
Ismene "Mizzy" Hazan
His wife, nee Callis. They met shortly after Ben joined Cobalt Company, and he was simultaneously baffled and enchanted by her. He gave her a kitten. Then they eloped. (That's the short version.) |
Jonas Hazan
Who knew Ben had a cousin? Not Ben, until like a year ago. Apparently Uncle Isak went north and had a kid. Ben is less wary than he was but still reserving judgement; good Hazans are pretty rare, and Jonas is kind of a handsomer version of Ben with a northern accent. How dare. Also there's the whole worgen thing. |
Mayellen "Yell" Hazan
A childhood friend from Westfall days. Definitely a friend. Certainly not a blood relative. There is even proof, now. (Ben treats her like a little sister, though, because he did for a long time just in case, and old habits….) Ended up marrying Jonas, so it's pretty good they're not related. |
Sil Silentstep
One of Ben's earliest Cobalt Company acquaintances, his former roommate and (still) best friend and confidant. Part of his original questing trinity with Mizzy. |
Ivrianna Marie Atley
Ben's little sister. (Not actually.) A brat. (Actually.) |
Cole Aspenwood
A chance meeting in a library led to the unlikeliest of bro-ships between Ben and the youngest son of the noble Aspenwood house. Ben was best man at his wedding. |
Lena Coit
Lena taught Ben to knit, and is an occasional co-conspirator in charm. They get each other, and he will always stick up for her even if she's a tough lady who acts like she doesn't need much sticking up for. She's been on his squad a few times. |
Rae Westwind
Ben decided shortly after Rae's arrival in Cobalt Company that she is his mentee. She's a friend and regular member of his squad, and Ben feels responsible for her in a fond, fraternal way. Unlike Ivri, as a little sister she is not a brat. Just kind of an angry little mule sometimes. |
Cressidha Aspenwood
Cole's sister. Harder to read than Cole. Likes sandwiches, though. Made a suit for Ben for Cole's wedding. Is dating Sil and asked for Ben's advice about it, so now they're good friends. |
Erixa
A paladin bro. Yes, she's a bro. Calls Ben "Tourguide Ben." |
Estel Herald
Another bro. Regular at Bruuk's. Appreciates a nice potato. Kind of like Aunt Niris if Aunt Niris were 20 years younger and not scary. |
Mordecai Aspenwood
Cole's husband. Real skittish in a way Ben sympathizes with. Good for talking to, appreciates a sandwich. Good friends with Mizzy; she was Matron of Honor at his wedding. |
Oranna Stormbreaker
Very sweet lady, good with guns and animals, looks good in a blouse. She and her fiance gave Ben a part-time job when he first came to Ironforge and he did a lot of work around their shop. Then her fiance died in Northrend and Oranna has been around a lot less. It is sad as hell. |
Jocoza Sparkwire
Ben's tiny Cap'n. Undying loyalty, ma'am. |
Dane Atley
When Ben arrived from Westfall, he was an apprentice blacksmith looking to better his craft. Atley took on his teaching, and he became one of Ben's earliest male mentors and role models. |
Brannagen Stillwall
Ben's occasional squad member and former Explorer's League mentor. Knows pretty much everything about history and archaeology and old stuff. |
Brother Vond Satterly
A paladin of the Argent Dawn, for whom Ben took an instant fellow-feeling. A sounding board and something of a peer mentor (perhaps ill-advisedly). |
Sir Sevastyn Black
A paladin of the Argent Crusade, friend of Aunt Nir and Sir Elo, who oversaw Ben's paladin training. Real role modelly kind of fellow. |
Alaisa Lysander
Sir Elo's secretary and the Company's translator. Smart, organized, knows like four hundred languages. Pretty sure she's making some up. |
Almeiria Fey
Creepy? Was creepy before she joined Cobalt. Then joined Cobalt and said it was Ben's fault. Still creepy. Was on his squad in Vashj'ir. |
Alysson Mondragon
Relationship un…clear. |
Annibeth Jansen
Friend of Mayellen and Jonas. From Westfall. Loud in a bombs kind of way. |
Auralind Mistwalker
Ma'am. (Don't call her that.) Fellow Company lieutenant, except like a hundred times more qualified; intimidating. |
Azizia
Has been on Ben's squad. Pain in the ass. |
Alice Reyne
Cobalt. May have come to Bruuk's? |
Anareline Evensong
Cobalt. |
Arric Falrevere
Cobalt. Easygoing, chatty. A noble and kind of prim but not a snob. |
Arthur Reeves
Cobalt Blade mage fellow. Been to Bruuk's a few times. Real nice but kind of confused. |
Bertrand Aspenwood
Cole and Cressidha's big brother. Seems easygoing. Used to be 7th Legion. Died one time in Naxxramas but got over it. |
Caliette Glenarven
Cobalt. |
Caspis Silvershade
Was on Ben's squad one time. Didn't like it; likes Sir Atley instead. Wanders off a lot, both in his head and for real. |
Celaven Evensong
Hung out with Ben one time while he was fishing in Zangarmarsh. Nice fellow. |
Cellara Rivenbark
Seems intense. |
Costentyn Shine
Ex-marine from Kul Tiras. Looks like a pirate, which is badass. Friend of Admiral Fallon's, which might be less badass; unsure yet. |
Dara Tennerow
Cobalt. Noble girl, prissier than Lady Cressidha. |
Donnall Cloudskimmer
Cobalt. Related to like a dozen other dwarves in the Company. Or two. Okay, it's two. |
Eilanthe Stormlight
Cobalt? Unclear. Seems judgey. |
Emerine Nightvine
Cobalt. Seems mysterious. |
Florande Wildbloom
Was on Ben's squad in Vashj'ir. Really young for an elf, really sweet for a bear. Has a lot of feelings about the Ancients. People being angry makes her nervous. |
Gaakhed
Maybe was at Bruuk's? Moths or something? |
Sandy Spellbond
Was on Ben's squad a few times. Nice fellow, cheerful, has whatever is the opposite of a brain. Ben is real sorry about what happened to him, but also real glad he won't be on Ben's squad anymore. Is going with Miss Whittle, which kind of seems like they should cancel each other out in the brains department. |
Glynnara Cragheart
Has a great pig. Senator's daughter, in case you forgot it. (She did not let you forget it.) |
Glyphe Tinkerspell
Cobalt. |
Granny
Cobalt. A scary grandma gnome. Brings muffins to Bruuk's and yells at people. |
Gwenivene Whittle
Cobalt mage. From Westfall. Pretty much the smartest person there is about a few things, but not about others. Real sweet and cheerful, though. Doesn't kill things. Is going with Sandy. Those last two are probably a good combination because Ben is pretty sure that going with Sandy would ordinarily make anyone want to kill him. |
Halliday Tyrrell
Used to be Cobalt, then quit but didn't actually? Bad brother. Rescued by the WEB warlock fellow and married him. Old friend of Mizzy's. |
Ilinaia Windwalker
Cobalt. |
Iphindra
Cobalt druid. Grows plants in Bruuk's and people's hair sometimes. Was on Ben's squad in Icecrown. |
Jenzelle Halveris
Former Scarlet, old friend of Rae's. Seems way too sweet to have been a Scarlet (unlike Rae, where you can sort of see it, to be honest). Joined Cobalt kind of undercover to help get other people out of the Scarlets, until the Lich King sort of fucked that all up. |
Kaerix
Cobalt. And also cobalt, ha ha. Hot blue girl, good at languages. |
Kenelly Ashewood
The first Cobalt worgen, kind of a test case. Tested pretty well. Big on Helping, kind of motherly. |
Kit du Lac
Paladin, Argent Crusade, red hair temper. Kind of fell out with Ben about death knights, but they're okay now. |
Kyris Lysander
Swordsman who sank in Vashj'ir with Ben and his team. Intense, not the sort of fellow you'd get a beer with. Probably doesn't drink beer. |
Lireen Cloudskimmer
Older dwarf lady warrior, seems kind of motherly for an old dwarf warrior. Is actually the mother of like a dozen dwarves in Cobalt. Or two. Okay, it's two. |
Lloyd Lowynn
Gravehowl worgen in Cobalt. Seems kind of non-combatant. |
Mansia
Draenei shaman. Extremely scatterbrain, like in a way it does not seem possible to be. Maybe that just happens when you get real old and have too much shit to think about, like with Caspis. |
Merhea Hurley
Cobalt. Untrustworthy. |
Natlee Spatterspark
Cobalt. |
Nesselos
Cobalt shaman draenei. Seems nice not like in a "yeah, he seems nice" way; like, he seems actively Nice. |
Niksi Knockfathom
Genius ocean gnome. Knows everything about the ocean and science, very little about acronyms or bad words. Has unusually strong feelings about fish. |
Aitne Windwright
Company client, teaching some people about archaeology. Smart about a lot of things, enthusiastic like Bran, maybe enthusiastic about some things she shouldn't be. |
Alynnra Mondragon
Alysson's mom? Maybe? Has a whole other person in her head. Miss Fey is kind of unhealthy about her. She is the one who cursed Rae but didn't know it and kind of not on purpose, apparently? |
Duchess Avrenne Esprit Fallon
Extremely polite in a terrifying way. Some kind of mastermind, except about her husband. Thinks Ben should write another book but might have an ulterior agenda; seems like a lady with a lot of ulterior agendas. Sort of Rae's mom now. |
Admiral Siamus Fallon
Admiral. Richer than anyone has business being. On the House of Nobles with Sir Elo. Is a privateer as well as a navy fellow, which is amazing. Turned out to be less amazing about being married and all, which was real disappointing. Sort of Rae's dad now. |
Lady Master Sergeant Sintha Fallon
Absolutely not. |
Timmet Grimblast
Kept showing up to Bruuk's and wanting to join Cobalt. Well actually kind of a huge pain in the ass. |
Captain Zath Tyrrell
Was Sil and Lena's captain when they were in the 7th Legion. Ran in the House of Nobles election with Sir Elo and Admiral Fallon. Set up the WEB. Does not seem like a real fun fellow. |
Marie
Ben's first horse, a sturdy and patient black mare. |
Dare
A young, fleet-footed golden gelding, as rangy and restless as his rider. |
Hattie
Not Ben's cat, exactly, but the kitten he gifted to Ismene early in their courtship. (Technically, before either of them knew they were courting. Maybe Hattie knew.) As a loyal attendant of Mizzy's, Hattie receives frequent tribute from Ben in the form of feathers, badly-knit cat toys, and art, which she no doubt fails to appreciate. |
Darlin'
A white hen Ben brought back with him from Azeroth to Outland. (Did you know they eat ravager eggs in Outland? Nasty.) An escape artist who refuses to be cooped, and can usually be found trotting at Ben's heels. It's possible she has a weird interspecies crush. |
Princess
A speckled hen, comrade to Darlin'. Strongly disapproved of Outland and probably of Ben for bringing her there. Somewhat mollified by her new home at the orchards in Hillsbrad. |
