Kaldorei legends speak of spiritual cats called finel'dahal — "the last breath". They earned this name because it was said a dying feline would only perceive them as they took their final breath, as the finel'dahal was awaiting them on the other side of the veil of death. These spirits are guides for the souls of sabers and other cats. But they have also been known to appear for kaldorei (and occasionally other sapient races, unbeknownst to the night elves) with a special affinity for cats.
Finel'dahal are capable of crossing over and manifesting in the physical world, but rarely have reason to do so. They are intelligent beings, capable of rational thought and communication with other sapient species. This comes in the form of telepathic speech, but usually only those capable of seeing through the veil of death can hear them unless the finel'dahal expends special effort to be heard.
Thaeru'kal — whose name in Darnassian means "Follow Her to the Stars" — is a finel'dahal that had befriended the snow leopard wild god, Har'koa. For millennia she wandered the lands of Northrend, looking after passing souls, especially around Zul'Drak.
When the Drakkari turned against their gods, Thaeru'kal lamented that she could do nothing to help her friend. If the trolls could imprison a wild god, surely they had the means to incapacitate a finel'dahal. But at last a band of mortals came to Har'koa's aid, and Thaeru'kal was more than happy to respond when the wild god summoned her to assist the mortals. Together, they avenged the other fallen gods and freed Har'koa.
Thaeru'kal felt especially drawn to Auralind Mistwalker, the kaldorei among the mortals who Har'koa had originally called to. Both god and spirit could sense the feline affinity in this one, and Thaeru'kal knew well the depth of sadness in the elf. Not so long before, she had guided the soul of a white lion that died at the Battle of the Wrathgate; Auralind's dearest friend, Elu'shalla.
Elu'shalla had told Thaeru'kal much about Auralind, and so she already felt a connection to the Sentinel. With Har'koa's blessing, she chose to remain at Auralind's side, aiding and befriending her as the noble lion once had.

| Auralind Mistwalker When Auralind and her companions came to the aid of Har'koa, the wild god called upon Thaeru'kal to assist the mortals and guide them through Quetz'lun's underworld. After Har'koa was freed from her Drakkari captors, Thaeru'kal chose to remain at Auralind's side, having grown fond of her and sensing the profound void left by the Sentinel's deceased companion, Elu'shalla. |
