Elodie grew up believing that the Light's embrace was conditional. Even before the schism between the Argent Dawn and the Scarlet Brotherhood, the Gardner family was quite protective of their little girl. If she was good, if she learned to cook and clean and say her prayers, one day she would be a beautiful bride for a worthy man and bear him children that then she would raise in the ways of the Holy Light, just like she was raised.
She was not an unhappy child, but nor was she a particularly joyful one. She did her duty, and she learned her letters and her scripture, and she sung the songs of the Light in the cathedral with her Brothers and Sisters, and when she showed a healing talent, the Gardners were happy to encourage her to spend more time deepening her connection to the Light.
And so it was that her parents found her a man to marry. Sir Tamerron Asher was a gentleman in Elodie's presence, a knight of little natural talent who worked hard to compensate. And if Elodie's heart had been drawn to someone else, a childhood friend who had left New Avalon to serve the Alliance, well, that would not prevent her from doing her duty.
The arrival of Acherus was a grim omen. Death Knights attacked on the day of her wedding, slaughtering her fiancé in front of her moments before they spoke their vows.
It was that childhood friend who found her hiding in the ruins of New Avalon. Sir Alois Fairdale brought her to safety and took her to the 7th Legion. To this day, they call her the Scarlet Bride.
